Mixed messages cause frustration, fear

By Jenny Drabble
Winston-Salem Journal 1 hr ago

... "I wish they would just say 'yes' or 'no' definitively so we could have that certainty and not have to live in fear," said Sandra Munoz, who was brought to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 7 years old. "So far it’s back and forth, nothing official, just playing with our emotions" ...

"They shift from 'The dreamers are safe, we love dreamers,' to'‘We’re taking away DACA, pack your bags and prepare to leave,'" Parsonage said Thursday. "Last night there was a deal, this morning there isn’t. It’s frustrating, incompetent and some variation of cruel" ...

1. stop letting 'Dreamers' twist in the wind

The Times Editorial Board

... It would be outrageous, frankly, if they can’t reach an agreement. Trump’s decision earlier this month to withdraw the DACA protections promised to some 800,000 people — most of whom came to this country as a result of decisions made by their parents — was cruel and unnecessary ...

We hope the president and .. Congress can .. make this work. Fairness demands it, as do most of the American people ... Dreamers deserve not just protection from deportation, but a path to true citizenship. These are people .. who often have spent little time in the country where they were born, speak only English and have been brought up as Americans. To qualify for DACA protections, they had to be in school or have graduated or to have been in the military.

Trump should set aside his insistence on his silly wall .. and put the well-being of the Dreamers ahead of his ill-advised campaign promises.

2. Everyone Is Confused

By Matt Laslo

... rank-and-file Democrats fear their party leaders may be the ones getting duped. In exchange for solving DACA, the president is demanding ramped-up border security, and while Democrats say they have already taken funding for a physical wall off the table, they may be willing to support sending more agents to the border along with additional drones and other border-security enhancements ...

"No, I don't think the president actually understands what he's saying half the time, so I'm afraid if he struck a deal with them that he'll go back on his word at any time," Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego told reporters. "I'm always skeptical when dealing with Donald Trump."

7. Message on DACA, Dreamers loses coherence

09/14/17 08:45 AM—UPDATED 09/14/17 10:31 AM
By Steve Benen

... when Donald Trump’s administration rescinded the DACA policy that extended protections to nearly 1 million Dreamers, the New York Times noted an interesting behind-the-scenes detail: White House officials were reportedly worried that the president didn’t "fully grasp the details of the steps he was about to take."

The piece added that these same officials "privately expressed concern" that when Trump discovered the "full impact" of his policy shift, he might reverse course ...

... we’ve reached the point at which Trump wants to protect the young immigrants who, just last week, he wanted to strip protections from ...

... Trump seems lost without a map. During the campaign, he vowed to rescind DACA and subject Dreamers to deportation. After the election, he said Dreamers can "rest easy." Last week, Trump scrapped the DACA policy, only to suggest soon after he’s prepared to "revisit" the issue if Congress doesn’t act ...
