How a bill requiring Florida nursing homes to have backup AC died

In the aftermath of 2005's destructive Hurricane Wilma, Florida lawmakers approved laws to protect motorists at risk of getting stranded on the interstate, and residents of new highrises who can't climb stairs.

Proposed at the same time: a bill that would have required some nursing homes to have generators to protect frail elders from the ravages of heat and dehydration.

That bill died.

Cause of death: industry opposition and government miserliness.

It doesn't surprise me at all that they killed a bill for it. Fucking republicans and their god damn deregulated free market will take care of it bullshit. This, THIS, is what happens when you have limited over sight. For every business that does it right. 9 more are cutting all kinds of corners. Eventually the 1 knuckles under because the other 9 can undercut the one. Then all you have is shit made out of shoddy used pinball machine parts and the injuries they are going to cause.

Keeping all the $$ for the owners of the businesses is the only thing they care about. If it requires any person, not even the state, but any company or rich person to spend one dime, well, too bad about the deaths because those aren't important to them. Fucking killers.

Distribute them evenly on the front steps of the legislature and the governor's residence. Might as well let them enjoy their handiwork.

It might be interesting to see if any of the guilty are still in office or otherwise prominent.

12. Is it possible to track down the "no" votes?

It would be interesting to call any of the people who remain in the legislature who voted "no" and call their offices about it.

It would also probably be more productive to find the "yes" votes, and give those lawmakers some props.
