Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGot a call from a woman who was on the fence last year but loathes and despises DT now.
She's the young widow of one of my husband's relatives. We call each other a few times a year.
She says now that she voted for Hillary, but whenever I've talked to her since her husband died several years ago she has said things that made me think she was picking up the rightwing politics of some of her husband's old buddies. If I'd have guessed last year, I could have imagined her not voting at all. She didn't seem to have a fixed point of view.
Well, those days are over. She called me right after she'd "liked" something on my FB page to say she loved my "passion." And then she let loose with how much she hates Trump. She loathes him. She despises him. She can't stand everything about him and she thinks he is insane. Which he is, of course. And she listed many of the insane things he's done. She's clearly been paying attention; and whatever she might still hear from her husband's old friends, she's not buying it. (And she said that if her husband were still alive, they might not be getting along.)
She said that, working in a public position in a small town, she had to be careful what she said around there, and it was so good to vent with someone she knew would agree with her.
So I'll keep making my political FB posts, even though I know some people frown on them. Maybe there are more people like my relative's widow last night, who don't want to speak up themselves but are thrilled when other people do.
ON EDIT: she said that her conservative mother, in another state, doesn't like DT either. Keep it up, DT. You're losing them!

(1,089 posts)From family who I suspect either did not vote, or voted for him. They do not want to hear, see, or listen to Trump. They are repulsed. These are mostly women...

I think you're just supposed to swear at her, tell her to eff off, and then never talk to her again.

Lots of conservative non-politicians say smart things about Trump: David Frum, Steve Schmidt, Nicole Wallace, Ana Navarro, to name some. I like to pass those things along.
I'm with you.

(11,746 posts)We have 30 years of lies, smears, and irrational loathing about Hillary Clinton. Then you also have the fact that she is female.
I cannot speak for anyone else but it pisses me off when I hear anyone repeating any lies, smears, or irrational loathing.
You do understand that lies, smears, and irrational loathing is "conservative" ideology, don't you? That and tax cuts for billionaires.
It is extra irritating when erstwhile Democrats chime in with "conservatives."

(80,708 posts)I don't see how this... er statement relates to the discussion I was just having with pnwmom about her OP.
Maybe you thought you were responding to a different thread?

Based on people at DU,
"That even people who voted for HRC but did not display an appropriate level of enthusiasm for the candidate were 'responsible' for the mess we're in."
I don't agree with your characterisation. Is that ok? Am I allowed to do that?
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)I dont have to think it makes any sense, though, do I.

(11,746 posts)Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough that I objected to your characterization. I think it was clear enough. I think you set up a straw man, and I stated that respectfully because I have enough respect for you to believe that you would consider the issue.
No one that I know of actually believes that ""even people who voted for HRC but did not display an appropriate level of enthusiasm for the candidate were 'responsible' for the mess we're in." That is not the argument so why characterize it as such? What's the point of trying to characterize it this way? If you're going to counter the argument, why not counter the real argument?
Do you not understand what "conservatives" are doing to try to undermine us? Or do you think, in spite of a mountain of evidence, that this isn't what they're up to?

(80,708 posts)But honestly, I've been here since 2004, and it's always been that way.

(69 posts)...doesn't mean that in November, 2020, they'll bother to vote. Or that their hatred of him will translate into a willingness to vote for the likes of Harris.
Unfortunately.
That said, it's not like Donny is going to become presidential before then, so they'll still have plenty of reason to be ticked.

(28,793 posts)my sister asked me to stop being political and i said no way, i'm raising consciousness. and an old childhood friend, wrote on my wall to tell me that having me as a friend on fb had caused him to think more and not just take the knee jerk right wing position. it's been awhile since then, he very well may have still voted for trump, but i treasure that.

(108,977 posts)if the Internet existed back then, would you have spoken out in the early 1930's?
We are still able to speak out without risk to our lives or freedom -- and we should all exercise this freedom if we don't want to lose it.

(28,793 posts)and i do, consistently. like i said, some people have unfriended me. many ignore my posts. but you have to plant a seed if you can. it'a a bully pulpit and i use it. lately i'm addicted to twitter (and it's DU's fault! lol) but same story there. one thing i love about twitter is i can tell the president about himself directly to his twitter. i know his keepers don't let him see these posts but it still gives me pleasure.

(4,395 posts)I can believe that some people who don't pay that much attention to politics voted for Trump because all they know about him is that he's a "successful businessman". If they realise now that he's a racist pig and want to walk away, that's fine with me. I don't see the point in attacking someone who is in the process of renouncing Trump.
I also think that we can all make mistakes without them branding us for all of eternity as "racist pigs". I said racist shit when I was a kid and didn't know better and then I learned, grew up and stopped. That doesn't make me a "racist pig" for all of eternity. It makes me a person who made mistakes and then tried to learn from them.
If the only people we are accepting into the Democratic party are people who have never done anything wrong in their lives, it's going to be a pretty small tent and then good luck in 2018.

If I had said the stuff you said as a kid -my mother would have taken a wooden spoon to my ass.
A tale of two liberals - One who grew up in an 'intolerant' environment and one who did not.
Funny - now I'm the intolerant one.

(who all live across the country from me, in the deep South) and I have an agreement to never discuss politics. It is the only way to maintain our relationships and I have so few family members I am not willing to disown anyone--as long as we steer clear of hot buttons.
