Equifax had patch 2 months before hack and didnt install it, security group says

"The Equifax data compromise was due to (Equifax's) failure to install the security updates provided in a timely manner," The Apache Foundation, which oversees the widely-used open source software, said in a statement Thursday.

But, hey, we don't need to regulate industries. They'll always do the right thing by the public if we just don't burden them with those pesky regulations!

Now I have to pay 30 bucks to for freezes, ten bucks to each agency, and probably 90 bucks total counting the ten bucks to each agency when I later need to lift or remove the freezes. Could be more if I do either of the latter two steps more than once.

So, in other words, the credit agencies are going to make a fortune from people having to deal with this mistake they made. They should be paying us for all the inconvenience and aggravation, and potentially worse, they've caused us.

Between the fees to freeze/ unfreeze accounts, plus folks signing up for their "free " monitoring service that auto renews in a year, at which point is no longer free, plus folks paying every month for their full credit reports (we get one free a year, thanks to Obama, but that's not really good enough anymore). We're at risk for life because our SSNs are hacked, and guess who stands to make $$$ based on our efforts to protect ourselves?

Don't get me started on Equifax execs dumping their stock LONG before any of this went public...

plus another $10 to unfreeze. They'll profit handsomely, even if a fraction of us freeze our accounts.

And estimated losses on this is upwards of $4 billion

They aren't making a profit on this, however the other credit reporting agencies certainly will.

The automated line gives no option to speak to a real person, just insists on getting your credit card number. The # to call a real person was an exercise in frustration --she gave me the number to get on board with their "free credit monitoring program", had no idea what a credit freeze was, and put me on hold indefinitely before I finally gave up.
