Reaction to Spicer's Emmys appearance: Please don't normalize him

Reaction to Spicer’s Emmys appearance: ‘Please don’t normalize’ him

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer joins Stephen Colbert on stage to help clarify the crowd size during the 2017 Emmys. (CBS)

Sean Spicer made a surprise appearance at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night, and not everyone was laughing. Spicer, however, seemed pleased with his appearance. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly afterward, he said that at the awards show, “everyone has been very gracious,” even though “it’s not exactly a Republican crowd.”

For many, it was an attempt to “normalize” a former White House press secretary who repeatedly and blatantly lied to the American people on behalf of President Trump. Spicer’s joke, mocking his own claims about Trump’s inaugural crowd size, stirred many angry reactions on Twitter within moments of him leaving the stage.

“NO to Sean Spicer,” journalist Mark Harris tweeted. “It’s so great that we can embrace someone who used a powerful position to abuse the press and lie to America.”

“Do NOT cheer for Sean Spicer,” tweeted Kelly Dittmar, an assistant professor at Rutgers University. “This is how we normalize & excuse unethical, racist, sexist, etc. behavior.”

Others, including author and commentator Roxane Gay, argued that Spicer’s appearance reflected white privilege.

Riiiight. This never happened. Maybe--MAYBE-- one especially laid-back, chill, magnanimous and stoned Californian said this to him (though I doubt it) but this was definitely not a THING that was happening while he was in Cali.

Before Trump came along and made anyone who wasn't wearing a Klan hood look "moderate," Spicer was a spokesman for the RNC who identified more with the Cruz wing of the party in contrast to Republicans who at least tried to give the appearance of being sane. Just because he's not crazy enough for the Trump people doesn't make him any less of a wingnut.

Sure the Nuremberg defesne doesn't work, but...

When he did his briefings...

The press knew he was lying.

Everyone who is not a Trump humper knew he was lying.

Even some Trump humpers probably knew he was lying, but kept it to themselves.

He knew that everyone else knew he was lying and looked like a total buffoon.

He probably signed on with the thought that things will normalize and his press secretary position was temporary and he would get a position that he really wanted. He definitely hated his job and hated working for Trump. He put in his no camera's rule just so Trump couldn't see his "performance" and berate him. Trump told him on his last day he looked 20 years younger...that says something.

In Washington, you can't leave and talk endless trash about your old boss if you plan to get another job.

But last night on the Emmy's, his performance was definitely a FUCK YOU TRUMP as we all know how fragile Trump's ego is.

I'll save my outrage for a couple of other liars that manipulated the press, Congress and the goodwill of the populace, which resulted in scores dead and still has lasting implications today. Bush and Cheney.

He was paid to pimp for a pussy grabbing, Nazi loving piece shit. And has to live with that fact. He obviously didn't like it and took the first exit out when it was feasible.

And the fact he was willing to make fun of the shit he had to do...speaks volumes to me. Versus someone one like Cheney who has no regrets and still advocates what he did despite the thousands and still counting lives lost. Now that's scum and evil. But applying this label to Cheney and then applying it to Spicer, dilutes the word "scum" and cheapens the evil Cheney did in my view. Spicer may be a word pimp, but he's no Cheney.

...Spicer isn't part of Mueller's probe, far as we know. So "treason" is a bit too far, at least at this stage. And I love my wife, not Spicer. I'm just acknowledging I was entertained by Spicer and his skit at the Emmy's had to be some butt hurt to Trump. So don't put words in my mouth I never said. And nor am I dismissing his lies, however, most were not fooled by them and he isn't responsible for thousands of lives lost, seriously, lying about a crowd size killed who? Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and no doubt Trump once everything is revealed, have. If there is a proper outlet for rage....

As for making the USA a fucking joke (I don't like using the term America...its insulting to all the other nations on these two continents, as if they don't matter), too late. The election of Trump was the last nail in that coffin. Anything afterwards, are just consequences. Nor is Spicer responsible for that, it was the voters who voted for Trump and believing the bogus ABC News adds on Facebook that said Obama was forbidding the pledge of allegiance, a pedophile sex ring under a pizza shop, Democrats were going to confiscate their guns, etc.

Done? Ok. Just note, it was you who was trying to convince me to get "outraged" on something I considered trivial in the grand scheme of things. 50 years from now, this won't even be a footnote in a history book, however, Trump on the other hand.... I'm simply stating, I don't believe his chaotic and humorous tenure (and yes, it was humorous, everyone in that room, anyone with significant brain matter, etc. knew he was lying his ass off and knew that he knew, wasn't fooling anyone except Trump) as press secretary is worthy of it, with all things considered. Even Democratic Presidents have lied to us in the past, much less their staff. Should I be outraged as you because Bill Clinton got a blow job that wasn't his spouse and lied about it? Hey, it was embarrassing to the country as well. But was it impeachment worthy? Hell no.

Suggestion, switch to de-caf.

Side note, do you know anything about living in a Yurt full time? Wife and I are kind of entertaining the idea.

It calls into question everything he said. Its like when Nixon said "I'm not a crook" - it actually puts the idea in people's head of him being a crook. Now, the Emmys may be preaching to the choir and their audience may already see Spicer as a liar but for any viewer who didn't, that seed is now planted in their head and they will be more inclined to question anything he says. It's not going to get through the Faux news bubble but it might get through to someone who is less woke than the DU crowd.
