Right-wing and fringe media are claiming yet again that President Donald Trump was correct when he accused former President Barack Obama of wiretapping in Trump Tower, now arguing that a legal wiretap targeted at former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is proof of Trumps claim. However, said wiretap was pursuant to a warrant and targeted at Manafort, not Trump. This is at least the fifth time in six months right-wing media has attempted to validate Trumps lie.
CNN: US investigators wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders before and after the election. The Obama administration wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders initially as part of a 2014 investigation into work done by a group of Washington consulting firms for Ukraines former ruling party, CNN reported on September 18. Though the surveillance was discontinued at some point in 2016, according to the report, the FBI restarted it after obtaining a new FISA warrant as part of its investigation into potential ties between Trump campaign associates and the Russian government:
US investigators wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders before and after the election, sources tell CNN, an extraordinary step involving a high-ranking campaign official now at the center of the Russia meddling probe.
The government snooping continued into early this year, including a period when Manafort was known to talk to President Donald Trump.
Some of the intelligence collected includes communications that sparked concerns among investigators that Manafort had encouraged the Russians to help with the campaign, according to three sources familiar with the investigation. Two of these sources, however, cautioned that the evidence is not conclusive.

They were asleep at the wheel.
