(130,895 posts)'If you have family or friends in Mexico, use SMS messaging or WhatsApp. Emergency Services need the phone lines to answer calls for service.
If you wish to help Mexico, the best way is to send money. Here is a list of organizations that will put that money to work. The reason money is best, they are already collecting anything from pickaxes to blankets, and water in Mexico City and other areas of the country. They are already getting baby food. The money will allow organizations to buy what they dont have enough off and will help to prime the economy. We will keep this at the top. The blog will continue under the help area.
Of note, the Mexican Red Cross has opened a wish list using Amazon.com.mx I tested it. You can enter the Mexican version of the site using your password. Just remember, prices are in Pesos.
We are also linking to the official government page, where all groups are listed. Most are in Mexico, but if you know any in Mexico it could be useful.'

But seriously, you say you were hacked, you insist people reset their passwords... basic cyber security. If you were hacked or not it is really not my business, nor do I care.
I really do not care for your type, the Limousine insider DC, so called liberal. but really, basic cyber security.
Oh and I have tried using your fucking system to reset it and move on at least 5 times, one from Mexico incidentally during a shive. (the week of mourning in the Jewish tradition, I do not expect you to know that)
Nadinbrezezinski is my fucking user name.
Incidentally, I told your fucking party it was making a Weimar level mistake when you nominated HRC, enjoy that. I told you guys you were doing that before you did that before the primaries were over, and incidentally, my ROV used white out in San Diego to erase Sanders votes, welcome to the Torta effect. (yes it went to court by the way, and the ROV lost)
It is YOUR FUCKING PARTY. Neither democrats or republicans represent me, a simple working class media person that called Trump a fascist. But I am a working class member, and I get it why he got elected. But your party chose to steal the primaries. You are as guilty as the SDs were for the same fucking mistake at the twilight of the Weimar Republic. Historians are sure to call it exactly that.
But can I get that, so I can fucking move on?
Thank you.

What's so funny/wrong about her "reporting" of this supposedly huge Revolution is that Orange County turned blue for Hillary for the first time since WWII, or around there. San Diego can't be much more conservative (military town) than the OC. That is a much bigger story than people she ran into badmouthing Hillary.

(9,535 posts)She was a wildfire/emergency reporter primarily, and covered occasional other stories such as interviewing politicians or covering public hearings for a publication I edit, before leaving to start her own blog on politics several years ago.
Her opinions voiced on blogs are her own, not representing the publication or myself personally. I disagree with some of her views and particularly her choice of words in her parting messages to DU during last year's contentious election.
That said, trashing the publication I edit is irresponsible. It has won 101 major journalism awards including first place investigative awards from Society of Professional Journalists and San Diego Press Club. Many of those awards were for our well-documented reports on wind project.
It has never published "pseudo scientific nonsense." In fact the publication has taken the lead in discrediting climate change deniers. I've personally interviewed climate change scientists from Scripps Institute of Oceanography and other leading scientific organizations and published audio on the news site. You can hear those in the radio section of the website, since the news outlet also know has a radio show on a social justice public radio station.
I believe what you may be referring to were our award-winning reports on some negative impacts of major wind energy projects in our local region. It is true that an 11-ton blade hurled off a wind turbine. We published the photos as proof and other media later confirmed this as well. The project scraped bare 12,000 acres of desert, and Dust Bowl like conditions ensued for those living there. The project also had an entire turbine tower 500 feet tall collapse. There are hydraulic oil leaks. There were chemicals used for dust suppression where the cannisters were discarded on site and leaked into waterways when it rained, flooding the town of Ocotillo with a flammable chemical. Each of these problems and more were documented with facts, photos, documents, interviews, etc. and won many awards.
Don't believe those here who seek to discredit press as "fake media" for reporting truth. That's the job of media.
Again, I am not defending every statement the banned poster made and certainly not the diatribe at the end, long after she was no longer freelancing for the publication I edit. The stories in question on wind issues were mostly stories written by me, and meticulously fact checked. The wind company in question was owned at the time by a company with roots in the fossil fuel industry that was a subsidiary of the Carlyle Group. They actually faked longitude lines to get subsidies, making it appear the project was 3,000 feet higher in elevation than it's actual location in a place without adequate wind. We interviewed experts who predicted it would fail to produce the power promised. Five years after it opened, it has indeed failed to produce the minimum power promised every single year. I stand by my reporting on that wind project 100%, and also on another trouble-prone local wind project that has had multiple failures, been involved in lawsuits, started a brush fire, and had stray voltage 1,000 times higher than normal inside homes nearby; that resulted in a university medical study that suggested a cancer cluster could be tied to the wind project's voltage issue.
This is not to say that all wind projects are bad or that we don't need alternative energy sources. We do. But as with nuclear that was promoted as clean and green because it didn't pollute the air like oil and coal fired power plants, wind energy projects are not without problems when they are placed in the wrong locations, or built improperly with shoddy construction or defective parts installed or made by corporations putting profits over people.
Also on edit to comment I posted earlier, my memory failed me on one point: she worked for the Mexican Red Cross, not the International Red Cross in Mexico. My point in posting here was that she does have many sources in Mexico and on her new blog site has beaten out other local and national media in reporting on much of the damage issues in Mexico.
Her reporting on wildfire issues for the publication I edit was mostly excellent, and she put her life on the line more than once to go to the scene of big wildfires on our backcountry areas, always fully outfitted with fire-resistant gear to stay safe. She saved lives and showed kindness, carrying water bottles and blankets for evacuees during summer heat and winter cold. She went to the front lines of fires to report on the progress and find things that needed fixing, such as people not evacuating rural towns because they had no place to bring livestock or large pets. She'd tell the firefighters, and they'd get a shelter open, and she'd go back to tell the people. She would visit shelters to make sure they were really open when announced (sometimes they were not, and she'd find people huddled outside bewildered, wondering where to go.) She once reunited a family separated during a fire. So I have respect for her as a decent human being, and just wish people would leave her alone. She is not here anymore, and it is mean-spirited to attack someone who is not here to defend herself.

Even though it was calculated that the turbine blades would have had to have been moving at about 600 mph.
She doubled down on her story about the turbine blades, even when proven wrong so many times.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)If a turbine blade is not properly secured, with certain launch angles at several wind speeds, one can travel close to a mile before hitting the ground. She may have witnessed or saw and actual event and hyped it a little.
Codeine
(25,586 posts)They're 175 feet long and weigh 11 tons. And the blade in the event referenced most emphatically did not fly that far. It basically fell.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Must have been a while ago. More modern blades are made of materials that are much lighter and also more resistant to shear. But if they come loose at the right angle at the right speed, they can travel a ways before landing. I an not sure that even the base of newer wind turbine weigh 11 tons, but maybe since that is where magnets that make the conversion happen rest and unfortunately the best magnetic material is still heavy (that is changing as newer composites have been invented, though none commercially yet).
Codeine

(27,814 posts)... who "reported" that Mexico City was buried under ten meters (that's 32 feet) of hailstones during a hurricane a few years ago?
Is that the same Nadin Brzezinski who claimed that wind turbines were unsafe because their blades could come loose and fly a mile high straight up in the air?
Is that the same Nadin Brzezinski who claimed to be a "professional journalist" while she was writing articles that were "published" - unsolicited and unpaid for - in a newsletter right next to the "pork chops on sale" ads?
Is that the same Nadin Brzezinski who claimed that anyone who didn't buy her bullshit was too stupid to recognize her journalistic genius, and were apparently part of the "bullies" who were intent on destroying her by pointing out her ludicrous, fact-free assertions?

269. I am reading the book right now
After seeing the fire here. Because, quite frankly, this much thick black smoke, that fire is hot...we are talking several alarms worth.
Please, read it yourself. Stop with the journals until you read it
In reality it should have staid in fanfic, where those themes are common. Hell I read decades ago some of that crap (yes, it is crappy writing) in fiction writing groups that was far better written that went nowhere commercially and had better written and developed characters. Yes, you read a lot of crap in those groups and genres you would never read otherwise.
This is, quite frankly, to be kind, a 500 page first draft of a badly developed piece of work that somehow jumped to mainstream. I suspect part of the reason is the attention given to it, and controversy sells. I use the words written work with trepidation, but it has very little to redeem it as literature...
But it is what it is, and cannot wait for the raging wild fire when the movie premieres. I guess I will have to watch it, since likely it will be a commercial success. I just hope the movie improves the heft of the characters from paper thin, best case to somewhat developed. Yup, it is also that media thing, and ix know I am way late to the party. Yup, was under a rock.
I can see, reading the actual material, how this has a sub group of feminist scholars all kinds of angry, but instead of telling us about the domineering Christian Grey, which he is, and that is all he is, rather ask why are women chiefly attracted to this sexual fantasy? Now that, if you must, is the question I would be asking...but that is, once again, after reading the primary source (and I still have ways to go)
Oh and as far as Ana, I read in a history class one of the earliest porn books ever written...those characters were submissive (Victorian era,) they were very assertive compared to Ana, who is a unidimensional 12 year old in the body of an older person. Her inner though process, book is first person, is that of a teen, crap, crap, crap...holy crap.
Forgive me for not remembering the name of that book...I made a point to forget it after class was over...it was that badly written, in comparison to this that was some stellar writing.
But anybody who wants to discuss this...should actually read it...something about primary sources and due diligence.
Though, it is stellar easy reading when sick. Trust me, can't do the County's climate action plan right now.
But my inner writer is gnashing teeth. This actually is a commercial success...glad I did not pay full price for this...
This is quite possibly the worst piece of writing I have ever read that has been published, oh and the sex is that badly written too.
So I will ask, what made this such a success? My going theory is...controversy. Hell, that is the only reason I bought it.
https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5305255

I was fooled by her for an embarrassingly long time until I had an instance of personal knowledge about a serious subject (the Egyptian revolution in 2011) and asked her a question in one of her pontificating threads about it - because I genuinely was hoping for more information - and the answer was just utter bullshit. I started paying more attention to her after that, and she confirmed my opinion - full of shit and arrogantly rude to any that question.
she trolled this site in a classic manner - causing otherwise decent members to get themselves in trouble by posting flamebait and getting in fights with anybody that asked a question or dared to disagree with her. she played victim and claimed everybody bullied her, but the reality is she was a troll and lived for the attention.

(32,886 posts)The only thing that really bothered me about her is that she convinced far too many people of things that were really nonsense.

Combined with her Spanish fluency, she's been a must read for me amongst others.
She was not well suited for a discussion board but has found her footing elsewhere. I wish her well.

(25,396 posts)Get a life folks. Not ten of you - my best guess - have ever read Nadin's byline from the infamous SOCAL firelines. Or seen her photos of those fires. Hell on earth. And Nadin is always there.
Nadin gave me regular fire weather "heads-up" warnings when I was in USFS-FIRE in south Arizona. Her reporting was front-line. Her analysis was spot-on. And her fire weather predictions were near the top of my list for accuracy.

(36,298 posts)Sometimes she was spot on and you provide specific examples of that. But other times, and you have to admit this is true, she was way, way off and she didn't take the criticism well. There's threads here that show that in both cases. When she's was on and when she was off.
Kali
(55,007 posts)have you read any of her more...erm...less credible stuff? for example, there are a couple of links posted in this thread that you might want to look at, just to be fully informed and objective.

(18,101 posts)you shouldn't have posted about her. I've never seen any member get away with being so nasty with the people here for so long. That includes being nasty with members, mods, and admin. She loved making enemies here. I was extremely happy when she got canned. That was the single most effective move for admin in trying to make this a more peaceful site.
