In the war of words between Jimmy Kimmel and Sen. Bill Cassidy, the late-night host has the better grasp of health policy, health care analysts say.
Kimmel who had allied himself with Cassidy after the senator famously proposed a Jimmy Kimmel test for health reform blasted the Louisiana Republicans last-ditch Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill in a seven-minute monologue on Tuesday night. While Cassidy had pledged to protect people with pre-existing conditions like Kimmels infant son, who was born with a serious heart condition, the proposal Cassidy co-authored with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) wouldnt live up to those promises, Kimmel said.
This guy, Bill Cassidy, he just lied right to my face, Kimmel said.

Cassidy countered Wednesday that the talk-show host didnt grasp the nuances of his legislation. I am sorry he does not understand, the senator told CNN on Wednesday morning. More people will have coverage, and we protect those with pre-existing conditions, citing a provision in the bill that states would have to ensure certain protections for individuals.

But experts say that Cassidy and Grahams bill can't guarantee those protections and that Kimmels assessment was basically accurate because of the flexibility the bill gives states to set up their own health care systems. For example, health insurers could hike premiums for patients with pre-existing conditions if their states obtain waivers from Obamacare regulations as Kimmel said.
Cassidys plan would pave the way for insurers to deny coverage to people with a history of medical conditions, five HIV/AIDS groups warned in a joint statement on Tuesday.
The bill would also roll back the Affordable Care Acts Medicaid expansion and make other funding changes, like converting Obamacare funds into block grants and ending traditional Medicaid as an open-ended entitlement that would force states to choose whether to cut Medicaid enrollment, benefits or payments to providers or else raise taxes.

(51,584 posts)was actually laughing while lying, denying and eventually walking away while being interviewed on MSNBC Cassidy was right behind him. They said Kimmel lied and no one should believe HIM! I wanted to punch my TV set but utilized my new clown/tRump punching bag instead.

(14,565 posts)That's the way I would view it, anyway. I don't believe in details as opposed to big picture logic. They were never going to allow an entire year to pass without taking this action.
So many things happen at deadline. I'm still reeling from the lame duck GOP senate passing an anti-online gambling bill at literally the final hour of the 2006 senate session. Bill Frist attached the legislation to a completely unrelated must-pass port security bill. They allowed one hour of debate in the wee hours. Only days earlier the sports wagering websites were relieved because it looked like there was no chance the bill could make it through in time, and if not we were safe.
I've kept that example in mind throughout this health care situation. Never underestimate the underhand desperation of the Republican Party. Obviously it's exponentially worse and more evil now than in 2006.
