Did you just feel the earth tilt?

Sept. 22 marks the fall equinox, ushering in the year’s best season on a day that lasts almost exactly 12 hours no matter where you are on the globe.

I hope all of you out there in DU land celebrate in some appropriate way: We are going to have a neighborhood chant circle at the setting of the sun.

The equinox will strike, like a bell, on Friday September 22, 2017. It heralds fall in America, autumn in Europe, and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. So the safe term for it is the September equinox.

It is the moment at which the sun, traveling as ever on the ecliptic, crosses southward over that other sky-circling line, the celestial equator. This moment is 20:02 Universal Time, which is four or more hours earlier by clocks in North America.

The poles are the only places that do not have 12 hours of daylight!

of fall, didn't really equate the word Equinox with it, but a bit of serendipity: I was looking for some background music to put on while working from home today and just for grins I put on my Styx playlist...first album up was called Equinox! Neato! Kismet!

“We’re essentially stealing a bit of the Earth’s momentum as we go by,” said Michael Moreau, who leads Osiris-Rex’s navigation team at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

As a consequence, Earth’s tilt will change ever so slightly, too small to be worth calculating. “It would be a very small number,” Dr. Moreau said.
