(63,221 posts)This administration's priorities are so messed up. They are flying around on private jets, yet people in dire need are being neglected. It's disgusting and shameful!

(16,072 posts)They're the wrong color! The only reason he was Johnny on the spot for Texas and Florida is because of the white population of those states...and he needs all the white, "Christian" conservative, KKK, Nazi mother fuckers he can get! Because after all of his buffoonery, those hard core racist and bigots are the only ones who will continue to support him!!!

(5,524 posts)I think many Americans don't even realize that they are Americans.
Even sadder, many of the ones that realize it may not think of them as REAL Americans.
I fear that things are going to have to get even more dire before the alarm bells go off.
Recovery there is going to be so much harder than in the Continental US. The logistical challenges of getting resources to an island will be very difficult.
Just as an example, Florida had a fleet of utility repair trucks descend from around the Country to get us up and running. How do you do that to PR. There might not be more than a handful of functional repair vehicles in all of PR after this storm. It will take some heavy use of cargo ships, ferries and military transports to get those kinds of resources there. And that is just the vehicles without considering all the poles, wires, transformers, etc. And all that for just electricity. The mind boggles at all of the other issues surrounding water, food, shelter, medical care, medicines, jobs, transportation, banking, communications etc.
It is horrible to even consider what that island has ahead of them. Without a massive mobilization of resources, they will be the equivalent of a third world country for at least a year. Probably many years.
The only thing they do have going for them is the ability to come here. I suspect there will be lots of victims coming to stay with friends and family for at least the indefinite future. It would not surprise me if a substantial number never make it back.

As a dam cracked in Puerto Rico, spreading fear across an already devastated island, Donald Trump was in Alabama, calling a black former NFL player a son-of-a-bitch.
During a 90-minute rant that veered from incoherence to the raw belligerence weve come to know in the Age of Trump, the madman who is president went after sidelined NFL quarterback Collin Kaepernick without calling him by name.
<SNIP>
The fissure in the earthen structure holding back the Guajataca River threatened to put 70,000 souls in the path of 11 billion gallons of water flowing through Northwestern Puerto Rico to the ocean. While officials on the island rushed to evacuate and save lives, the president of the United States was rambling about Rocket Man, his nickname for his erratic counterpart in North Korea, and reveling in guttural chants of lock her up! referring to his vanquished opponent in the presidential race that concluded ten long months ago. He waved his little hands around in absolute delight, telling his screaming Alabama fans theyd have to ask Jeff Sessions about that. He said Republicans in congress dont have the guts to repeal Obamacare and leave 30 million Americans without healthcare.
Meanwhile, in Hurricane Marias wake, 3.5 million Puerto Ricans face months without power. The island, already reeling from a debt crisis, is awash in despair.

(7,178 posts)Legal aid provides the calm after the storm. After the storm subsides and the water recedes the exhaustion of survival will be met by the harrowing realization that their journey back to normalcy is only just beginning. The daunting work of putting their lives back together will require interaction with myriad governmental agencies and private businesses in order to interpret their rights to services and financial assistance. After a disaster, Legal Aid helps put lives back together by providing:
Assistance with securing FEMA and other benefits available to disaster survivors
Assistance with life, medical and property insurance claims
Help with home repair contracts and contractors
Replacing wills and other important legal documents destroyed in the disaster
Assisting in consumer protection matters, remedies, and procedures
Assisting with mortgage/foreclosure and landlord/tenant problems
You can help make a difference in assisting victims of the flood to regain their homes, their financial stability, and their lives. Please donate to the to assist Puerto Ricans in need of these essential services.

(16,166 posts)that staging in MacDill is being ramped up.
It's gonna take our military a while to get on the ground and put generators and all those fine things we have to use.
They are the only part of our government with the equipment needed. Picture Bahgram AFB without the Taliban.
