The white man in the photo is Australian Peter Norman and through the years remained friends with both John Carlos and Tommie Smith after they gave the Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics. When Peter Norman died a few years ago, both Carlos and Smith gave eulogies and served as Pallbearers at his funeral.

we used to have way more tolerance... That it's possible to disagree without animosity. What a concept....

The history of what happened to those athletes in response to their peaceful protest is heartbreaking. Look it up on wiki.
The racism in this country is deeply shameful and it's time for us all to put an end to it.
