Kaep & the rest said over & over this is about #BLM & racist police brutality. It's about calling attention to how America has a racist society. It's about multi-culturalism & inclusion.

You could add that his response, to kneel, is NOT a militant gesture. Instead, kneeling before something is a gesture of respect and could be seen as respect AND asking the United States to live up to the values we espouse. What do THEY think the flag stands for.

In the past, the gesture was the black power fist or turning one's back. Here, he knelt. Your point on the right framing this extends to this. Even though his gesture was not inherently disrespectful, it was IMMEDIATELY labeled as such. That labelling sent the message that NO message the right wing disagreed with could be sent by athletes - lest it disturb their enjoyment of the sport. This is a DIRECT attack on freedom of speech - even in its most passive, quiet, peaceful way.
