Three key public figures who stood for economic and social fairness and against racism and corruption were gunned down in a very short time. Now I am 73 and looking back. I was 18 when Kennedy got shot. And I was on the curb on 5th Avenue near my Jr college when his limo passed just 4 feet from me on the way out of Springfield, Illinois. And I was in a study hall when it was revealed that he had been shot. I believe that is when the country began to turn sour in so many ways.
The Kennedy's & MLK championed the idea of social, racial and economic justice. And they were all killed. And LBJ was the modern FDR who tried to continue that legacy but got bogged down with Vietnam.
The GOP and its allies including the Koch's dad and most likely Trump's dad hate Kennedy with a passion. Kennedy was warned NOT to go to Dallas but he did. The Koch's dad put out a hateful pamphlet in Dallas a few days before his arrival that had the same attacks we have seen on Obama for 8 years.
The GOP feigned sadness over Kennedy but I know many of them were glad in their hearts. Nothing has changed only the GOP dark hearts are now in the open. ACA repeal and Trump proves it all.

(6,252 posts)If RFK was elected, and I know LBJ would have moved heaven and hell to keep him from getting the nomination, this Country goes down an entirely different road. The Vietnam War ends in 1969, saving 21,000 American lives. No Watergate. No Jimmy Carter, who was a reaction to Watergate. No Raygun, who was a reaction to Carter. No "Madison Ave. " induced patriotism, see Micheal Deaver. And maybe no Roger Ailes or faux news!
i think we could have carried on, after JFK and MLK, but RFK was the final, fatal blow.
i don't think it is a coincidence that the peak of American can-do drive into the future was the moon landing--only a year later--and we have been declining ever since, diverted into ever-darker paths, racially, intellectually and economically. now we are in a new robber-baron era and headed in the wrong direction while our planet goes up in flames

(15,233 posts)Volumes of solid documentation contrary to the conclusions of the 60s assassinations exist.
Today the anti conspiracy theorist involved in foreign Russian conspiracy is on center stage in the Whitehouse. While being investigated for what is ultimately treasonous activity he actively accuses the government which he administers of treasonous behavior. The world turned upside down indeed.
Does make you wonder who did Lee Harvey Oswald and now Donald Trump work for?

(10,602 posts)That ara was a time when there was a push for social, racial and economic justice. We had many key figures who were pushing for a decent society and a model similar to the Scandinavian countries where you could live a decent life. Sure you had richer people but they did not totally dominate things like they do today or did during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

(15,233 posts)Cronkite made the claim grand conspiracies do not exist because people talk. There was quite a bit of talking about the 1960s assissinations usually in the context of lone nut interactions when circumstantial evidence made that questionable. Who wants to bet the lone nut explanations resurface for Trump?Collusion is hard to fathom when Trump himself comes close to a lone nut.

(31,941 posts)JFK was murdered by a left wing ideologue. RFK was murdered by a Palestinian nationalist. MLK was murdered by a right wing social outcast.
Ford, of all people, was shot at two times. Both were leftists with clear mental issues. Reagan was the only one shot by a conventional mentally ill person with no known political background.
I am sure more would have been murdered since then but security has learned many lessons and that has stopped them.

(5,275 posts)LHO was just as he claimed, a patsy. JFK was killed by the Mob and rogue right wing spook types..... the right wing was upset that JFK worked something out with Russia on the Cuban missile crisis, the Mob wanted their Casinos back in Havana.
BTW Dallas was try number 3, the first was on 11/2 in Chicago, blown up by a black FBI agent, try number 2 was in Miami a few days before Dallas but an anonymous phone tip stopped that.
No problem in Dallas. Windows were supposed to be closed but were not, they got the snipers off the roofs. They got the route changed so the car had to slow down a lot going around basically a u-turn.
I have video of doctor after doctor saying the kill shot entered front Right and the huge exit wound was in the top left back of the head.
And of course nothing fishy about Oswald being silenced quickly and in the freaking police station.
Remember the House Inquiry in the 70s finding was there likely was a conspiracy....the only reason they could not be more definitive is that Mob witnesses kept being killed just before hey were to testify, most famously Johnny Roselli, who was found killed, chopped up, and stuffed in an oil drum bobbing in the Potomac River.

(36,744 posts)I don't care about his personal life one hoot, for instance. Many try to smear his memory on his infidelities. To me, I just shows he was human like the rest of us.
He saved us from nuclear holocaust.

(4,379 posts)This country went to hell after Kennedy was assassinated. At the time I thought it was a simplistic view of what is wrong with America. Now I believe he was right.

(36,744 posts)John Kennedy meant a lot to the American people. His killing brought a cynicism of government from which we have never recovered. Innocence lost, basically.
