telling them that they would lose their scholarships if they participated in any of these kneeling protests. I don't know if that is really true - but if it is - and Black athletes are kicked off college teams and lose scholarships - it would have a bigger effect on College Football itself. Black athletes make up a considerable percentage of players on college teams.
Colleges need football. It is a revenue generator for colleges. If teams were decimated because they kicked off Black athletes - college football would suffer and that would in turn effect the whole college in general.
Football - in itself - has major problems with the concussion issue. Football doesn't need another issue to further its - in my opinion - ultimate demise. If I was a parent of a boy that wanted to play sports - I would point him away from football - as it is hazardous to his long range health. If boys don't participate in football at the peewee level, and high school level - college teams will ultimately suffer - and further down the line - so will the NFL.
The NFL and Colleges don't need Trump meddling into their arena - as that only further complicates things for them.
Trump is an idiot for picking a fight with football or at least the Black athletes of football. This will not turn out good for Trump.

(25,242 posts)reason. If as you say - 70% of the NFL Players are Black - if that statistic were to be hurt by Trump and his making an issue of this - it would certainly hit the pocketbook of the owners. Are they in solidarity because they really support the Black players for their stand on this kneeling issue or is the real reason - that it might ultimately effect their wallets?

(39,371 posts)and support for the players, a lot of whom were raised by single mothers who have now been slurred by the freaking POTUS of all people. If you listen to comments from people like the Maras who own the Giants and Rex Ryan a former coach and now commentator who is (or was) a strong Trump supporter, you'll hear some authentic passion, IMO. And it has been good to hear.

(36,461 posts)And that there, is a huge problem in this country. I'm all for college athletics, but when a ball coach is the highest paid public employee in most of our states, it's a true reflection of what we really value, & it's not brains.

(17,984 posts)What does it say about higher education when colleges bring black athletes in just to play football and smash up their brains? It tells me they are not wanting POCs to be academically successful. Instead, they are just wanting revenue.

I have not been in favor of the huge importance of college athletics for awhile. I think the emphasis should be on STUDENT athletes that are students first and athletes second to avoid exactly what you are saying. As it is now, many of the students there for an education are prevented from competing on the sports teams as they are pushed out by all the "ringers" who are only there as a gateway to the pros and see school as secondary
Would the football teams would become more diverse with more asian and middle eastern students being able to participate if we removed colleges from being farm teams for the pro sports with little regard for education? Let the athletes who merely see college as a gateway to the pros go directly into pro sports.
The unintended consequences of your position is since most college athletes don't go to the pros, that many would end up with nothing. Under the current system they do have the opportunity for a degree that may ordinarily be out of reach

(121 posts)For over 30 years, and I RARELY recall the college teams even on the field for the National Anthem.... Usually the home team marching band plays it while the teams are still in the locker rooms, then the teams make their entrance to the fight song. Not really an issue.....🙄
