(243 posts)I entered the name of the church into Facebook's search mode and this link came up first:
Notice the image that accompanies it, then see that underneath it says [Representational Image]

EDIT TO ADD that I know this isn't a reliable source, but it is the first thing that came up in a search which means all the Fox News Trumpers are going to run with it if they see it. There's no need for "representational images" in breaking news stories.

(15,888 posts)I wouldn't trust a newspaper in India to get things correct as they probably conjured up the only photo they had about a shooting in the US.

(243 posts)the racial stereotypes of crimes here in the US. And that when other people (Fox News people) see this story, they're NOT going to see that it's a "Representational Image."
There's no need for any outlet to use a random image like this for a breaking news story.

(243 posts)It isn't about the reliability of the source.
I shared it because it was the first link that came up in a FB search. Which means Fox News types are likely to see it and NOT notice that the image isn't accurate re: the breaking news.
I shared it because it's racist as hell which is NOT uncommon in our media and it's interesting to me to see it in international media even though it is not a reliable resource nor one I've heard of before. (Which makes me wonder why this came up first in a search???)
I'm not pointing to them as being a reliable outlet. I'm pointing out the damage that ANY outlet can do with this practice of "representational images" which many outlets do and how it spreads on social media.
