Alt-right Catholics are getting faith leaders disinvited from speaking at colleges

A small group of right-wing Christian websites are attacking Catholic leaders who encourage the Church to build bridges with LGBTQ people, sparking online campaigns that push schools and Catholic institutions to disinvite them from speaking.

The latest example came earlier this week, when Shawn Copeland, a Catholic theologian who teaches at Boston College, was scheduled to speak at a college in Michigan. The topic of her talk, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, was Pope Francis and his “agenda for social justice” — a relatively benign topic for Madonna University, a Catholic school.

But a few days before she was scheduled to speak, Church Militant—a website affiliated with far-right Catholicism—published an article blasting Copeland for promoting a “pro-homosexual agenda,” citing sections of her theological works where she suggests Christ would embrace LGBTQ people.

A few days later, a Facebook post run by the school’s Center for Catholic Studies and Interfaith Dialogue announced Copeland’s talk had been canceled “due to some messages in the media that misconstrued the content of Dr. Copeland’s lecture.”

he is one of those that decry censorship of conservative ideas, yet he has a chair at Princeton.

eat a huge bowl full of Assholios, and spend the next fourteen hours silently meditating on how best to interfere with everyone else in the world. They keep framed pictures of tRump on their nightstands, and the glass in front of his face has been licked through; that's how fervent their worship of god-on-earth is. They must flagellate themselves with whips dipped in sacramental wine and salt while watching Hannity and repeating the mantra "Evil is good".

They go against god when they politicize it all. The bible was for slavery and catholics got over that. Time to do the same with all things anti-lgbtq. I just wish Pope Francis would allow for birth control (leaving out abortion) for women who are poor and powerless.

who uses religion to justify their contempt for anyone not exactly like themselves. I think it would be nice if Pope Francis excommunicated them all so he could get on with liberating the rest of the Catholics.

At least my personal experiences have proven this for about 45 years. When I was studying to pursue my second degree I learned that Catholism is considered a cult (take it up with the World Book Encyclopedia and not me).

Now all the DU Catholics can feel free to tell me your BS...I am used to it. I grew up in a Catholic community so I am used to blowing it/you off.

The original Christian were Roman Catholics who used political connections and brutal force to suppress competing religions, relegating most to pagan religion status. The history of the Catholic Church is pretty interesting, popes once raised armies to put down competitors, often in brutal fashion. I am writing a novel that has a tiny amount of that in it, so I had to research a little. The whole thing is sort of facinating, if you think today's politics are cutthroat, you are wrong, there was much worse.

Money, power and control of the masses is part of human civilization. Your work must be extremely complex (to say the least).

Need I say more.

On the other hand if human atrocities in the name of God can find an apex, the sacking of Rome by the hordes of Martin Luther can find no higher pinacle. Their goal was to wreak pain greater than hell itself upon the papists and they did their best to do so.

God's love shown through the imagination of humanity is an ugly history.
