My family didn't have the wealth, power, and influence help me avoid the draft. Instead by dint of chance, I was born a couple of years too late so I missed the draft bolus, although I was subject to the draft lottery. Chance again in my favor in that I got a number high enough not to have to worry about a letter from the local draft board. Which was good, since my heels were completely devoid of spurs.
