Some right-wing politicians and pundits cant stand black athletes getting well paidTrump wants to silence them on behalf of jealous, offended white people.

In the wake of President Trumps All Massas Matter speech in Alabama where he urged NFL owners to get their players in line, Ive noticed something about many who stand with Trump and against athletes who dare speak out.
In many cases the argument against the athlete involves his money. These commenters use multi-millionaire in front of athlete as if its a pejorative. They also use overpaid or even spoiled. They are saying rich athletes do not have the right to protest precisely because theyre rich. Newt Gingrich ran down these lines on Fox and Friends when he referred to the athletes as millionaires over and overusing the term with comic frequency. Its clearly part of his talking points.
Gingrich has it backwards: the black millionaire who needs a therapist is one who feels like black people arent oppressed because he himself is a millionaire. But my real question is this: why is the players large pay a critical part of the argument and why is it used as a disqualifier?
This is a particularly bizarre sentiment in America where having lots of money is, in and of itself, proof of your importance. In this country, were taught to listen to people who have money just because they have money. The only reason why anyone listened to Trump in the decades before he was president is because he was wealthy. So why is it having money means we should listen to you except if the money is made by an athlete?
I think part of the answer lies in one of the central ideas of the modern rightthe notion of who is hard-working and who is not. If you listen to Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh for just 10 minutes youll hear them describe their followers as hard-working, and imply or say outright that the other side is lazy and wanting hand-outs, which is code for entitlements and welfare.

(64,990 posts)When those two talk about how much money they make, BY TALKING POLITICS, it's a badge of honor.
But, have a black guy talk politics when he got rich playing a sport, and that's bad.
Money and Politics, good if white guy talks about it.
Money and Politics, bad if black guy talks about it.
I get it.

(3,569 posts)Therefore not earned. Especially in basketball and football where over sized human beings are normal. "Hey if I was seven feet tall I'd be in the NBA".... This goes across racial lines, I think, but is made racial by the preponderance of people of color playing the sports..and that until yesterday were only POCs protesting.
But,
Right wingers don't appreciate the arts either no matter the color. The arts almost always tells the tales of oppression. Of class wars and wars on the environment. . They never listen to music, think it's easy to be an actor,(be good looking), or performer and HATE it when money goes to public art. Art they like if they can make money on it, is an investment, or serves them in some way, but seldom just for the art, the joy of it.
Moving money around....that's how you make money.
