Why is it now that Trump has an issue with the NFL and the players?

1) He thinks he can shame them and feed his basic.
2) He wants to make more news concerning himself and feed his base.
3) He knows he won't get his way, so he needs keep his base.
4) He is looking to pick a fight with anyone he can, to feed his base.
5) He is listening to Fox News and they're provoking this by rhetoric for his base.

It is all about his base, being a bully, and his rhetoric. Not Colin Kaepernick, it is all about Trump! Maybe some feel that what the NFL did yesterday was wrong, but you know what? They did not just have a few kneel, lock arms or stayed in the locker room, the whole league did it as one. What can you say about that? It shows unity and that is what we need out of our government. This is one thing the NFL has gotten right.

I think Mueller is getting too close to some embarrassing, if not criminal, evidence and Trump wants to cover it up with meaningless noise.

He can't do anything about North Korea and has to lash out and something or somebody. Easy target. He wants to be seen as a fighter and a winner. Thought respecting the flag was an easy win.

Once more he fails to accurately take the temperature of most of the public.

See, this was his first mistake -- he started by tossing entire countries, races, and religions into their maw.

And they ate it up, yum yum, and wanted more, More, MORE!

So he's having to scrape for suitable nutrition for his zombie worshipers.

Had he started smaller, like maybe just tossing a couple of people at a time, they wouldn't have developed such an appetite and he could have kept it up for several years. But now, like Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, they say "feed me" and he must provide. Or they won't love him anymore.

Or worse, they might start wondering what Trump Roast tastes like.

3) Fox News holds on to grudges years after the fact. If anyone disrespects them they're on their shit list forever.

4) The republicans hold on to bullshit forever.

He wants to make the few friends he has left forget that, thanks to him, the North Koreans are getting ready to try to nuke Seattle.

And going after the NFL is cheap and easy.
