Trump claims he doesn't know much about 'Ray' Moore

By NOLAN D. MCCASKILL 09/25/2017 10:03 AM EDT

President Donald Trump says he doesn’t know much about Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, including apparently his name.

The president on Monday twice referred to Moore as “Ray” in an interview with the “Rick and Bubba” radio hosts ahead of Tuesday’s special primary election. Trump has endorsed incumbent Sen. Luther Strange and appeared at a rally in Huntsville for Strange on Friday.

“Luther Strange is going to be a great senator. He loves Alabama, he loves the states and he loves the country,” Trump told the radio hosts on Monday morning, according to AL.com, in what he said may have been his first radio interview as president. “He will absolutely win against the Democrat. Ray will have a hard time. If Luther wins, the Democrats will hardly fight. If Ray wins, (Democrats) will pour in $30 million.”

Co-host Rick Burgess twice corrected Trump, who acknowledged it’s “not a good sign” when the president doesn’t know your name. “I don’t know that much about Roy Moore,” Trump conceded. “Roy Moore is going to have a very hard time getting elected against the Democrat. Against Luther they won’t even fight.”

Even though Trump is supporting Strange, most of the Trump supporters seem to be backing Moore, who is an unparalleled far right ideologue. The fact that Trump supporters can diverge from the endorsement of their vaunted leader so easily tells me that Trump may not have the cult of personality following that everyone thinks. Many of Trump's apparent hardcore supporters will only support him as long as he parrots their ultra-conservative views, not the other way around.
