(13,776 posts)Two years ago they would have had at least some sense of shame and wouldn't have written that in black and yellow. Now, specifically because of the President of the United States, they feel free to announce their racism loud and (even worse) proud.
I have no words.

(575 posts)The overt racism. The bold feeling that people can advertise their racism and be proud to be like that.
Be oh, so please with themselves.
Ever since President Obama was elected there is a certain type of white people who have gotten more and more openly racist.
It makes me feel like crying sometimes.

(575 posts)I would love to see a large group of african americans, at least 20+, show up at that garage sale and just go. I would love to see a statement made that way.
Being polite, walking around, acting like its any other garage sale. Maybe have someone ask why they are not allowed.

(11,175 posts)For years there was an annual ruckus about the custom of holding the Masters tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, because the club wouldn't admit blacks as members. That exclusion remained in effect until 1990, a quarter century after the enactment of the Civil Rights Act -- and it was legal. As a private organization, the club could set its own membership requirements.
No racial discrimination is allowed in a place of public accommodation, such as a motel in Atlanta or a rib joint in Birmingham (two businesses that figured in important Supreme Court cases about the Civil Rights Act).
This yard sale is a one-time event, not an ongoing business, and it's being held on someone's residential property. On the other hand, members of the public are obviously invited. So is it more like a motel, or more like a country club? Offhand, I don't know. I'm a lawyer, but nothing in my law school coursework or my subsequent practice has involved the law of yard sales. All I can say with confidence is that it's wrong to assume (as some people do) that racial discrimination is always and everywhere illegal.

(1,660 posts)And when they are called out publicly about it they will either lie and say they didn't know it was put there or else admit it and lie and say they had blacks attack or steal from them.

(3,191 posts)Are they having it backwards to keep out the Blacks? What if the Blacks showed up at 9am or 6pm could they buy some shitty cracker trash then?

(63,203 posts)Demographically Fayette County is 4.71 Black or African American, so this racist asshole apparently wanted to create the illusion of a courageous stance without actually having to "risk" a protest by those uppity blacks in town.

(5,354 posts)at that garage sale. If I saw that sign, I wouldn't buy anything there.. Even if it was exactly what I was looking for and the price was right. No way.

(1,786 posts)But not street view. If you look for just the town of Everson, and it isn't very big, you can see Pennsylvania Ave near the south end, about a block from the railroad tracks.

(14,490 posts)Even in my highly segregated area of the South in the '60s, I don't think folks would do that.
Why would anyone give a shit who buys their junk at a garage sale? I'll bet this was purely for show to their racist neighbors, family and social media friends. I hope some good white folks let them know that this is flat wrong.
Quote the Golden Rule to them and video their response!

(50,556 posts)This will take coordination with about twenty black people...and the renting of the driveway across the street.
Go to this racist bastard's garage sale and buy everything that's worth buying. Negotiate the guy down to as little as possible. Remember what you paid.
Go across the street and set up ANOTHER garage sale in the rented driveway. Make a huge show out of tagging everything a dollar higher than you paid.
On signal, the black people rush in and buy all the stuff while he stands and watches.
Also works with the Affirmative Action Bake Sales the College Republicans like to do, but there you get African-Americans to buy the goodies for resale to Caucasian students...at cost.

(31,816 posts)As far as I can. The closest you can get is the corner of Liberty Street.
I'm going to sound kind of stuck up - but I couldn't really see attending a garage sale in that neighborhood.
Signed,

(45,433 posts)if there is one, then they might be wanting to spite that one. It's not an area that someone from a city would accidentally show up for a garage sale.

Unless they are expecting Pittsburghers to show up.

Hope the e EMT's, Firemen, Police, and Emergency Rooms get that message from 139 Pennsylvania Ave.

(544 posts)We had to stay at the crash site and secure it so there could be a cleanup and investigation. It was deep up in the hills so there was no good way to get in and out other than hiking. The local PD and fire departments were having none of that themselves (wasn't their problem, after all) and told us good luck and watch out for the "Fayettecong" before they left.
We all had images of the movie Deliverance in mind that first night.

(111,252 posts)Or, as a lot of people describe it, Pittsburgh at one end, Philadelphia at the other, and Alabama in the middle.
The "people" who ran this yard sale undoubtedly consider themselves find Christians and voted for Sanotrum and wish he'd run again.
Ugh.
