(10,362 posts)The tabloids act like this is some new thing. It's just the first time they've appeared at an official event. But there have been photos of them walking around London for months, even ones where she's staying at one of his royal residences.
It will be interesting to see how the public and media reacts to another American divorcee in the royal family. It was pretty dramatic the first time.

(10,362 posts)It's the first step in introducing her to the British public so that they don't skewer her when the wedding is announced. But they will, they always do.

(10,362 posts)The royal family is not logical. And the British public can be worse concerning anything royal. Everyone who tries to marry into this family gets questioned and criticized as "not good enough." Even Kate "she's too boring" Middleton.
Hence the gradual revealing of them to the public. To build good PR and soften the criticism. Her being American, biracial and divorced will be made into a big deal, but at least she's not marrying the crown prince so it won't be as bad.

(47,209 posts)Crown. I've seen him and Will doing a lot of interviews about some big mental health initiative, of say their mom would be proud. Their dad should just take himself out of the line of succession though.

(10,362 posts)As Harry said, nobody in the family really wants the throne. It still amazes me that the public cares so deeply about Harry's choice. He has near zero chance of ever becoming king, yet some in the public act like an American duchess is the end of the world.
And yeah, Charles should go away. His mother is popular, he's not. Few want him to be king.

I think character and ethics often have something to do with it as well.

(61,690 posts)I hope at least one of their kids is a redhead like daddy. I love the red hair and freckles. But with genetic dominance being what it is, it doesn't seem likely.
Just the same, their kids will be beautiful. I think Harry is the handsomer of the two brothers.

(4,221 posts)Well, she has freckles herself, and I saw in one photo that Meghan's uncle (on her dad's side) certainly appears to be a redhead with a LOT of freckles so I think she may have a 25% chance of throwing up a recessive. I really don't remember my Biology 101 that well LOL.

(11,175 posts)Currently, in the line of succession, Harry is fifth, behind his father, his older brother, and his older brother's two children. He would have to outlive all those people plus any of his older brother's additional children (well, actually, only the legitimate children, nudge nudge wink wink), and even any legitimate descendants any of those people have.
Wounded Bear
(58,603 posts)IIRC, only members of the English peerage can ascend to the throne. A commoner who marries into the family is ineligible. So, even if Harry becomes King, his current wife could not technically be queen.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)She doesn't bear the horrid taint of being an American. Her marriage made her the Duchess of Cambridge, but she is a commoner by birth.

But we'd have to hear from one of our British compatriots to make a definitive statement.

(101,271 posts)It's certainly not about 'the English peerage', since there was a distinct tendency to marry foreign royalty (that includes Prince Philip, who got that title from his membership of the 'Greek' royal family (Danish by descent, imposed on the Greeks) at birth). I'm not sure there's a precise definition of "the peerage" you could apply for women (who are mostly not allowed to inherit the family titles) anyway. The one rule there was about spouses was they couldn't be Catholic - though that was got rid of in 2013, at the same time as the "sons inherit in preference to daughters" rule. As pointed out here, there is no theoretical reason a monarch's spouse can't be the same sex as them now, too. The reigning monarch does have to approve the marriages of the next 6 in line to the throne.
I expect that if they do get married, Meghan will get British citizenship beforehand, fast-tracked; I don't know if she'd be asked to given up her American citizenship. Peter Philips, the Queen's eldest grandchild (Anne's son) married a Canadian who retained her Canadian citizenship. As far as I know, she didn't add British citizenship, but since Liz is Queen of Canada too, that didn't really matter. She did convert from Catholicism, since their marriage was before the law was changed.

(82,383 posts)maybe her being divorced disqualifies her, but not her being a commoner. This would be a Queen consort, not a Queen regnant.
