Patriotism

My husband is an immigrant to this country. He was adopted through Catholic social services at the age of 5 and became a citizen at 9. He was sickly as a child, but the resources of his adoptive parents, coupled with affordable medical care, helped him stay alive and thrive.

He tried to join the Navy at 17. He wanted to serve the country that gave him a chance at life. He was below the height and weight requirements for men. Instead he resigned himself to volunteering to help wounded military people and now, elderly veterans.

My husband is a man who, if he is home alone when they sing the anthem, will stand, even on his weakest post chemo days. He will figure out how to get out of his chair. And will sing it along with as much pride in his voice as he can. We had the ballgame on in his hospital room 3 days after his last cancer surgery. He couldn't rise and in fact was so drugged it's amazing he knew.... but during the anthem he managed to get his hand over his heart.

I DEFY YOU TO FIND A BIGGER FLAG WAVER.

And yet, he was fast to say Ferret Head can go eff off. His favorite movie quote is from The American President, where Michael Douglas says we have to protect the right of people to burn the flag in protest.

The reason I'm posting this is because I want to tell people that not all flag wavers are kool aid drinking racist thugs who want to blow the shit out of the entire world.
