I wonder if this will lead to the NFL not playing the anthem at games anymore.

I could live with that...there's really no reason the anthem HAS to be played...I'd personally favor replacing it with a medley of the "SpongeBob Squarepants" theme and "The Happy Happy Joy Joy Song" from Ren and Stimpy.

That medley could be used for Olympic medal ceremonies as well.

We used to sing it and then shout, "Play ball!!" because that is what happened after the Star Spangled Banner was sung. This was in the 1960s.

I find it flat out annoying to have the flag and anthem at sporting events...never understood it. Further, since 9/11 the majority of pro baseball teams have replaced the 7th inning stretch with God Bless America. Silly with so many pro baseball players being from other countries. The 7th inning is for putting your arm around your fellow fans and belting out Take Me Out To The Ball Game. Glad I'm a Cubs fan and the tradition of singing the stretch is written in stone. Yes, the Olympics is about country.

The first one is constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere.

I will say that the Anthem before ball games is right up there with the Pledge of Allegiance at every assembly of any kind.

It seems that we are being required to prove over and over that we are patriotic Americans.

at least, they used to.

We were subscribers to the local orchestra and it was the very first performance. And here jumped the conductor and... yes, they played the national anthem. Completely surprise. At least, this was in 1978, don't know if they still do. Probably.'

It's a comedy set in Belfast during The Troubles that involves a partnership in a toupee business between two barbers, one Catholic, one Protestant-or one pro-Irish and one pro-British, depending on how you look at it.

The Catholic barber and his girlfriend are at a movie. At the end of the movie, "God Save The Queen" starts playing. The barber is not in a mood to hear it, so he and his girlfriend get up to leave. Two huge pro-British dudes block his way-the barber is a scrawny little guy-and, in a threatening manner, say "face the music, Paddy!". After they repeat that two or three times, and it becomes clear that the barber is going to get the absolute crap kicked out of him unless he complies, the barber turns around, terrified and humiliated, his face twitching with rage.

When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You're so fuckin' special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.
I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.
She's running out again,
She's running out
She's run run run run
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo,
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

for the national anthem by yelling at the players to put their hands over the hearts as the anthem was sung.

Some respect, right? Yelling.

And, of course, they did the mid-anthem cheering thingee when a few fireworks were set off at “the rockets red glare.” Another GREAT way to show respect for the anthem. Followed by the obligatory cheering at the end before the final words of the anthem have been sung.

All very respectful.

BTW - we have one of the crappiest national anthems. I’d prefer “America, the Beautiful” if we could get rid of its mention of the imaginary supernatural being.
