A Reminder of a Real President
Trump's response regarding Puerto Rico is disgraceful. From casual disregard to blaming the victim, he has continued to show what kind of leader he is.
I am reminded of the Earthquake in Haiti in 2010. President Obama was all over the news for days focusing attention on the tragedy and guiding support.
In the January 15th 2010 edition of Newsweek, Obama penned an essay on the disastrous Haiti Earthquake that had taken place just three days before. He described the relief efforts underway and talked about the importance of the humanitarian response. He ended with this passage
In the aftermath of disaster, we are reminded that life can be unimaginably cruel. That pain and loss is so often meted out without any justice or mercy. That "time and chance" happen to us all. But it is also in these moments, when we are brought face to face with our own fragility, that we rediscover our common humanity. We look into the eyes of another and see ourselves. And so the United States of America will lead the world in this humanitarian endeavor. That has been our history, and that is how we will answer the challenge before us.
That is leadership in a time of disaster. I miss him.
