(17,255 posts)If a single image could encapsulate this controversy, this cartoon would be a great candidate.

(4,483 posts)and (please don't point out to me that it's a cartoon and supposed to be exaggerated) the man saying "offensive" needn't look like a Neanderthal, either. I think it might be even more powerful if the "offended" person were dressed in a nice business suit.

Don't allow racists to reframe #TakeAKnee as being a debate about anthem & flag. It's a protest of police brutality & racism... ??
...which is why no one has ever been up in arms about folks buying hot dogs & popcorn when anthem is playing...
...b/c the racist backlash against athletes protesting is not about patrotism but about maintaining racial caste...
"How dare these black athletes (of course your president uses a different term ??) think they can get out of line & get uppity like that?"
Racists including Trump will try to frame the issue as "disrespecting the flag" & not police brutality...
...when in reality they are offended by the protest of police violence & racism, things Trump has openly advocated.

(15,027 posts)Institutional racism is as American as apple pie. And tRump has brought white supremacists, the kkk, and haters of every ilk out of their sewers and marching in the streets.
It's going to take us a long time to recover from the damage he's done, and continues to do, to America.

(562 posts)I'm a Generation X'er raised in a very blue big city in a very blue state. White supremacist were always a very small, hidden fringe group. Now a so-called president is making it acceptable.
This overt racism is alien to me and friends, but looking at MLK and Ali protests I now get where they came from a lot more.
"Make America Great Again" is code for return to the days of Trump's youth when minorities knew their place.
I don't think Trump or that racist part of the Trump base fully comprehends that not only is current oppression still felt, but even the children and grandchildren of scarred victims of discrimination often share an inner rage - transferred generationally - exponentially greater than their perceived loss of unearned hierarchy.
If they, under some delusion of superiority - when they're all either mind numbingly uneducated or spewing Trump BS without conscious, now decide to directly assault minorities' inner sense of value as human beings - well after achieving hard fought status - its going to met with intense resistance. The greater the overreach the greater the resistance.
I mean - just a final thought - the gall to object to opposition to the confederate flag, and removal of a Robert E. Lee statue - the man who killed hundreds of thousands to preserve the right to ownership of humans as property - and then be surprised if blacks (or anyone) oppose it...are you fucking kidding me?

(10,095 posts)Just like a poster said in another thread, commentators and others avoid discussing the reason why these players are protesting or project it as something else.

(32,595 posts)All the rightwingers' yammering is hiding the original message. Racism has to end, and law enforcement has gone way too far in their treamnet of black people. Both of these issues are two sides of the same coin.
Neither Fox News nor Cheeto are making any difference, so they should just shut up.
Football has nothing to do with politics, but I respect the athletes' right to make their point when they're not in unform. I think it's time to stop playing the national anthem before every sporting event.
