Youd fill it up with you-know-what, and then also your household waste, because everyone threw their trash out into that, Bagley said. Were hoping to find the individuals waste themselves, which, we can get seeds from what they were eating, we can find parasites, find out what their health was, but then everything else that they threw out from their house.
He said the team found a four-by-six-foot brick rectangletoo small to be the foundation for a house or a shed.

(182,769 posts)Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight dump of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five:
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
He said to his friend, If I drink and eat
Beer and nachos at the tavern to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft on the privy door
Behind my house, as a signal-light,
One if by beer, and two if by chips;
And I on the big round hole will sit,
Ready to grunt and spread the smell,
To every Middlesex hill and dell,
And wake the country-folk up to yell.

(13,421 posts)She said that same thing--people throw stuff down the loo that they don't want found. She said she'd found some pretty amazing artifacts when excavating a privy. She worked for a company that did emergency excavation work for municipalities building public structures and highways. If there was any possibility of the proposed site being of historical significance, they were sent in to reclaim everything they could save before construction damaged it. She had some marvelous stories.
I miss her terribly.

(25,183 posts)However, I did read an article many years ago that says that human waste is not toxic after many decades, and actually breaks down into something that resembles garden soil. The article explained that old bottle collectors love to find outhouse sites, since the bottles were much less likely to be broken, having landed on a soft surface, and being shielded from breakage by more of the same.
It seems that a lot of closet drinkers used to toss their containers down there, since they figured no one would look for them, at least not in their time.
