[Trump] has shown again he don't give a damn about poor people, he don't give a damn about people of color. An SOB that rides around in Air Force One is denying services needed by the people of PR

(3,847 posts)respect Honore. I do not.
" ... video footage shows Honore ordering them to lower their guns and cussing at those slow to obey. They were there to save people, not shoot them." He treated those that stayed with such disdain, it was appalling.
He is the guy that rolled into NOLA after Katrina, days into the crisis and demeaned NOPD that stayed and tried to protect and rescue people, cops that were under constant fire at the precinct house. He stalled into NOLA like a big hero after Bush had bungled the situation so badly and was treated like a star. His troops were evicting people from their homes and didn't do a damn thing to rescue any one from the Super Dome or the Convention Center.
He's from NOLA and he should have been their with the National Guard the next god damn day. He waited until things got easier for them to roll in like superstars.
This is from a New Orleanian that was there and saw it first hand (I just watched on TV) :
"As I said in my previous posts on this thread.. The "General" is a good leader. The "General" however, wasn't HERE during Katrina and only showed up later.
We should be taking this time to thank the thousands of heroes who stayed behind
and walked in waster deep water full of toxic chemicals and broke through roofs after
looking for half a day for gasoline to power their boats and those that stood their ground
and protected some of our most valuable assets of this great city.
The "General" isn't a hero. He is a soldier.
True heroes stood their ground in our darkest hour and never slept in the darkest of night.
True heroes are people you may never know or ever thank personally.I've said it before and I'll say it again.. I was here... for the entire event. New Orleans owes a great deal of thanks to all those true heroes who are sitting quietly
in their homes reflecting on those dark days and darker nights and wish to forget.
You never hear war veterans speaking much of their actions later on in life.
You will most likely never hear of the true heroes actions in those trying times.
They didn't have tanks or over 1000 men backing them. They were men and women
from this city and I for one would like to thank them for all they did because I saw it
first hand."

news coverage on the networks and cable, maybe because you were there and infrastructure was destroyed and TV wasn't available.
Well, the majority of news reporters were calling the people of New Orleans "refugees" as if they weren't Americans but foreigners fleeing war.
I vividly remember Gen. Honore when he took command and ordered those white guardsmen training their guns on the mostly black storm victims to: "Get those weapons down".
It took him to remind the guardsmen and the rest of the country that the people in need of help were American citizens, not fleeing refugees to be looked down on.
You might call that being a big shot, I call it re-setting the narrative and doing what a general is supposed to.
He didn't earn general officer level, and a three-star at that, by being shy.
From then on the use of the word refugees by reporters went down.

(4,164 posts)Suggest that 45 should load up Air Force One on Tuesday with all sorts of medical supplies, food and water that it can hold.
If the PR airport can only handle 2 or 3 flights a day then we need to make every landing bring as much usable support as possible.

(24,365 posts)Please read your second paragraph again and think very carefully about it.
Then use Google earth or maps and go find the San Jaun airport.
It's not like it's a grass strip, for crying out loud

(612 posts)Perhaps what the poster doesn't know is whether the damage to airstrips is so great as to not be able to handle more than two or three flights a day. I haven't been there to see the damage, nor have most of us here.
I don't believe he was implying a third world type lack of capacity...
IMHO

(24,365 posts)Their radar/ATC equipment was destroyed, at least the parts outside. The Air Force flew in temporary radar dishes to assist in ATC.
No stories I have seen indicate any damage to runways, taxiways or ramps

(24,324 posts)here is a recent flight log. A lot more than 2-3 flights per day, so the runways are operational..
although nowhere NEAR capacity

(612 posts)I just read myself that some airstrips have now been cleared by our military to handle the huge cargo planes, so maybe things are starting to happen. Far too slowly when so much could already have been done by water even if the ports are not able to be used. Aircraft carriers could have carried a whole lot of supplies, generators, fuel, and water, moved by helicopter to the island if there were no other way.
What aid is now being sent has taken so terribly long to arrive, and not kicking the Jones Act out the frikin' window is a crime. Why weren't the ships and hospital ship now being sent from Norfolk readied in advance of the hurricane. We already knew south FL was not going to be able to respond in a timely manner, given FL's own recovery efforts.
I agree fully with the fact that PR is getting treated like a red-headed stepchild here. I just thought Delmette2.0 didn't deserve getting his/her head bitten off.

(24,324 posts)The oligarchs get all the loot, and putin also gets latvia, lituania, belarus, estonia, ukraine, .....
There are 3 other airports in the east, west and south that can take 747s and a smaller one right by Old San Juan with a 5500' runway.

(8,021 posts)If the military isn't currently running that airport, it's unforgiveable.
They've got the capability to bomb the shit out of an enemy airfield, and 48 hrs later be using it themselves at full capacity.

(24,365 posts)He could have mobilized days ago!
I'm not a vet but I do have some understanding of naval ships and it seem to me a couple aircraft carriers could make enough water for the whole island, not to mention generate enough electricity to light most of San Juan
They only just ordered the Hospital Ship USNS Comfort down there, but it's slow and will take 5 days to steam from Norfolk

Most in the so-called "Liberal media" may talk about how bad things are in Puerto Rico and about how badly the people there are struggling. They may even talk about how bad of a job tRumputin's doing. But, they won't really go after him. In fact, tRumputin will somehow maybe even get away with it--Go to his fall-back position of try to blame Puerto Rico's problems on former Pres. Obama or Hillary. We know that his lame/racist/ignorant base--the ONLY people who matter according to the "Liberal media," will blame former Pres. Obama for Puerto Rico's problems just like they blamed Hurricane Katrina's mishandling on him (Even though former Pres. Bush was POTUS when Katrina happened). After they blame Pres. Obama for Puerto Rico, they'll yell "Lock her up" @ Hillary Clinton
