They didn't follow Trump's lead but went even further into the "deplorable" mire for which he stands. That's not really much of a deviation, especially when others so closely affiliated with Trumpism -- Bannon and Nigel Farage -- were stumping for Roy Moore. There was plenty of Trump on both sides of that election.
