The Instagram account @dadlivesmatteronelove which several people have attributed to Annakim Violette, the daughter of Tom Petty posted a searing attack on Rolling Stone today amid widespread reports of the legendary rockers death. If we take the account at face value, Violette has been posting tributes to her father all day, and one such post is one of his old Rolling Stone covers, where she goes off on the magazine for its tabloid nature, and for reporting his death when it has not been confirmed:

(153,182 posts)why the venom directed specifically at one magazine? Sounds like it originated with LAPD.

(28,136 posts)The confusion started with CBS News and the Los Angeles Police Department. CBS published Petty's obituary after tweeting that the LAPD had confirmed his death. The trade paper Variety followed, citing an unnamed source confirming the rocker's death.

(5,611 posts)support is the issue and perhaps the family is having trouble with the decision whether to withdraw life support. He suffered a massive heart attack at home (his wife's 911 call is online -- she didn't know how to do cpr apparently).

(31,464 posts)Ridiculous attacks about RS covers, dated articles and bad photos. That's not defending her dad, that's just ripping the magazine for things that have no relation to reporting on Petty's death -- a story RS did not break anyway.

(31,261 posts)She ripped Trump for going off half cocked like she think RS did.
Her language could have been better, but Tom Petty is a pretty big liberal and I am guessing his daughter is too.

"A rep for Petty did not immediately return a request for clarification."
RollingStone.com was the first place I went to read about him and I imagine millions more did as well. They really didn't have a choice about covering the story, CBS was the one who said he was dead.

(31,261 posts)When my Mom passed, I did not get the news until late in the day, she passed that morning. I was the farthest away and had only taken out my work phone, not my personal phone. At a time like she is experiencing now, a person feels hollowed out, it is easy to lash out.

(31,261 posts)We lost parents but I don't think either was a bigtime well known person, my Mom wasn't.
My Mom died suddenly from diabetes related cardiac arrest. But your situation sounds much more horrible than what I went through. You must still have tense moments with your memories. I was 1500 miles away, but my sister told me my Mom didn't suffer, she passed almost instantly. I know now, I wonder why I didn't call my Mom earlier that morning on what looked like a normal day for her and me. Your questions must be worse.

(5,810 posts)For his daughter to go on a rant. She needs to be at her father's side if he is as bad off as it was portrayed. Popping off on social media in a nasty post over a mistake seems a bit much. I am not unsympathetic to her situation. My father became ill and died in 8 days when I was 18 years old. So I know how that feels. We knew that recovery was unlikely and we were gathered at the ICU pretty much on a death watch. The very last thing on my mind would have been to lash out over something that was not intended to hurt or harm anyone. Blame it on her stress, I guess, but I hope she will think before she posts from now on, because it only made her look unhinged.

Yes, this was a fail on multiple media outlets, but considering the numerous times Mr. Petty has been interviewed and appeared in the pages of RS, it felt more like a personal betrayal.
I'm not going to pass judgement on someone having one of the worst days of their life, and having their loved one splashed across the world while he's still breathing, brain dead or not.
It's just irresponsible and callous.
Celebrities have families who have feelings.

(31,261 posts)He is a music icon around these parts. His birthplace and the area are no longer backwater north central Florida, but when he got his first hit, it was certainly a small town southern boy made it big, because the area didn't have many people back then, or at least nothing like today. Then he went on to become a worldwide superstar.
