Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., had some strange advice to those who may be faced with an active shooter situation: "Get small."
Following the country's largest mass shooting in modern history, Thune was faced with questions on gun control measures, and whether or not Republicans will take action.
"It sounds like [the shooter] used conversion kits and other things, you know, to make the weapons more lethal," Thune reportedly told MSNBC's Hallie Jackson. "Well look at the facts when we get them all in here. I think a lot of us want to do everything we can to prevent tragedies like that from happening again."
It's been confirmed that shooter Stephen Paddock was in possession of two bump-stocks, which enhance a semi-automatic gun to make it behave more akin to a full automatic though despite possessing bump-stocks, it is still unclear if the devices were actually used during Paddock's attack. Bump-stocks are legal to possess.

(38,187 posts)tell them to get small and that this is no time to be talking about THEIR security and no time to politicize their apprehensiveness about not being in a damn fortified work space with armed guards to ensure their safety. If the rest of us can live without it, they don't need it either.
Notice how the richest and most well protected people are also the people who tell the poor and unprotected, basically, tough shit?
Why do they need security from gunmen in Congress? They are all pro-gun, even many who claim not to be pro-gun will turn right around and let the pro gun ones have their way. So, maybe they should all carry their guns to work and save taxpayers the cost of all of that technology and equipment and armed guards' salaries and all of their other triple thick insulation from their own damn legislation. Notice how none of their own legislation affects them? It's because they know they will be protected by security details and armed guards in DC.

(10,279 posts)Since Congress won't act to reduce our risk of slaughter, I'm taking an economic step to enlist businesses to help. My family is not going to mega events that make us into big, fat targets. No outdoor or indoor concerts, sport contests, movie theaters, shopping in crowded areas, etc. Eventually, businesses that depend on the public turning out will perform some surveys to learn the reason why I'm staying away. They can have the answer now. The NRA has made me afraid of crowds.
Also, where I live now, there are a few 2Aers who go in public and into shops wearing pistols. When is see them, we leave and tell the manager that we are never coming back. Some shops are now posting signs that weapons are not welcome, but that is not enough. Screw'em. They need to be complaining to the politicians that the 2Aers are hurting their businesses.

(146,325 posts)In this shooting, the shooter was not targeting specific individuals. He was shooting into an area crowded with people, from a high angle vantage point. "Getting small" was of no value to protect people in that area.
Most people had no idea of the location of the shooter, so seeking cover was almost impossible. Given the high angle from which the shooter was firing, cover would have been scarce in that open area. The only real cover would have been to get under something that couldn't be pierced by a bullet, fired more or less randomly at the area. But most people did know know where the shots originated, and so did not know where to seek cover.
"Getting small" is a good idea if someone is shooting at you as an individual. In this case your chances of being hit by a bullet were almost entirely random and cover was not readily available, given the angle of fire. People who were able to run out of the danger zone had the right idea. Removing onesself from the target area was the best option.
But, nobody really knew exactly where the shooter was located. That complicated the problem they all had. "Getting small" was no protection.
