https://www.rawstory.com/2017/10/goper-stuns-msnbc-host-with-ar-15-claim-theyre-not-dangerous-theyre-like-trucks-driving-into-crowds/Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) insisted on Wednesday that assault-style rifles like the AR-15 should not be banned following the massacre in Las Vegas because he said the weapons are not dangerous.
...
Cole, however, was against banning AR-15s.
Theres millions of them in circulation, he said reflexively. When theyre used appropriately, theyre not dangerous.
They have to be dangerous! Geist interrupted.
So, again, so are some trucks driving into crowds, Cole shot back, earning a quizzical look from Geist. So again, I dont see that as the obvious answer.

How do you appropriately use a weapon designed to kill people and not kill people???
And btw
When appropriately used, radioactive material is not dangerous.
When appropriately used, cyanide, asbestos, lead and arsenic are not dangerous.
When appropriately used, cocaine and heroin are not dangerous.

One guy cannot kill/maim hundreds of people with a single knife. He'd likely get pounced on after one or two casualties (Portland notwithstanding).

(12,674 posts)I mean, practice and target shooting is about the only way you can actually use automatic firearms without killing people. And to use an automatic weapon while hunting is just ridiculous - you damage the meat, you damage the trophy.
So I guess that means there's no problem with legislating that for the general public, all automatic weapons should be kept at only ranges and target sites?

(82,849 posts)We just want to be sure these war weapons are used appropriately. As such, they are locked away at all times and brought out strictly for range shooting. After the shooter has shot enough stuff, the weapon is locked away again.

BUT LIKE GUNS, THEIR VERY PRESENCE PRACTICALLY DEMANDS THEIR USE.

(38,187 posts)Guns are for killing. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Anything made specifically for killing is dangerous.

Maybe you and John Thune could decide who will get small and avoid injury and who will shoot the "not dangerous" 800 bullet a minute gun.

(19,109 posts)Las Vegas the other night was exactly what those weapons are intended for. They weren'tt made for yokels to play war games with, they weren't made for target practice nor hunting, and they weren't made for home defense against burglars. They were made for exactly what this guy used them for, to kill and injure as many human beings as possible in the shortest amount of time.
