Some cases of the flu are being reported in major metro areas, like Minneapolis St. Paul, MN. It's not widespread, but it's out there. I stopped in today to get my vaccination. I'm an old fart, so I got the high-dose shot with an adjuvant that reinforces the body's reaction. That's recommended for everyone over 65.
The flu shot is covered by all insurance coverages, including Medicare, another benefit of the ACA, which mandates coverage for most preventive immunizations.
As a side note, the nurse practitioner at the Minute Clinic I went to asked if I also wanted a "cootie shot." I said, "Sure." So, "Circle, circle, dot, dot. Now I have my cootie shot."

(71,542 posts)not stay on our insurance past 24 and they must be in school the entire time, no free flu shots either. We do get the preventive care thankfully. 8000 deductible...6000 before they pay a dime...and then 20% until we reach 8000 out of pocket. New job so we can suspend this insurance and take job insurance...cost us thousands the last couple of years.

(21,204 posts)Our Harris County clinics here in Houston will give a flu shot to anyone who asks for one. If you have some kind of insurance they will ask for it, but you can get the shot for free even if you don't have insurance.

I've been out sick for two days now. Yes, folks, break out the hand sanitizer and get the shot. 'Tis the season.

(151,269 posts)But, they've been available for a couple of months already. I don't yet know how good a match this year's batch is for what will be circulating. I hope it's a close match. Looks like I'll be flying to California again a couple of times soon. Holiday travel seems to be what spreads the damned flu nationwide every year.

(34,189 posts)I have to ask my cardiothoracic surgeon if getting a vaccination is advisable right before major surgery. Mine will be coming up in a matter of a couple of weeks. Tomorrow I get the last test to find out. Next week hopefully they will schedule it. I'll ask tomorrow about the flu shot for me and for my husband.

(36,925 posts)Most anecdotal accounts of flu vaccine adverse effects aren't evidence based. The highest prevalence is soreness at the injection site (duh) and allergic reactions to egg proteins which some vaccines are based.

(151,269 posts)for a day or two. It bothered me when I was stirring stuff while making dinner yesterday. That's it. I've never had any real side-effects from any vaccination. The injection itself was completely painless, as usual.
Since I'm officially an Olde Farte (Alte Kaker, in Yiddish), I get the Super Strength Flu Shot with a high dosage and and adjuvant to irritate the system and boost the immune response. Scary, huh?

MineralMan
(151,269 posts)It's your body's immune response to the vaccine. It varies in severity, from just a sore arm to feeling crappy for a day.
That response is actually a good sign that the vaccination was successful in stimulating the desired response.

(58,785 posts)possibly 10, out of the 14 family and friends who came from 3 states and various cities to a gathering in Florida; some went home sick and/or well?, so never got a full count. But most arrived a day or two before, someone was presumably infectious even though not feeling kick yet, it incubated, actually mercifully skipped Thanksgiving Day, and hit the group big that night and the day after.
Incubation period, btw, is 1-4 days, average 2.
