At my podiatrist's office, the TV is always on this house buying show.
Maybe somebody else know the name of it, it's where they have a family going to buy a house and they show several houses and the family chooses one.
I told the office staff last week there that I appreciate them having that show on instead of FOXNews. I asked them to pass it on to the office manager.
We must persist!

(17,314 posts)but I believe House Hunters on HGTV may be the one you're referring to.
Yes, better than FOX. Dead silence, no picture would be much better than FOX.

(31,401 posts)which has a lot of fixer upper or house buying or renting shows. I'm a huge fan. Have a friend who was the subject of
one of the International shows (Lyon, France).
Have never encountered a lounge/waiting room TV tuned to HGTV but it sure would be something I'd endorse.
Good for your podiatrist and good for you giving them positive reinforcement.

There was also one about whether to renovate or sell, I think it was "Love it or Leave It." It was set in Canada.
You are fortunate. My dentist plays Fox News .... even though I always ask to have it turned off.

(6,400 posts)I know with my significant other we talk about the houses and the design ideas within and incorporate various ideas from the shows. Or plan for long range projects with some ideas that we get from it.
And blissfully, it seems like almost every show avoids anything to do with politics and religion. So it's a great "safe haven" kind of viewing thing.

(43,191 posts)It's basically background noise for my wife.
It's heavily staged/re-created (apparently the subjects of the show have already made their decision by the time filming begins) but I'll admit it is a little fun trying to guess which one they chose. And it's kind of cool seeing different houses in different cities in the country. So I really don't mind.
It's fluff, but I'll take harmless fluff over Fox News any day at this point.

(34,137 posts)The longest running one is House Hunters and it set up the formula. The buyers are shown three houses none of which meet all of their three main criteria. At the end they review the pros and cons of each, eliminate one, then pick between the other two.
Kinda of fun until you find out the whole thing is a scam. Usually the people hunting have already picked their house. The other two homes are ones that were on the market when the film crew arrived.

The blogosphere exploded with new evidence today that House Hunters, HGTVs not-at-all-guilty pleasure about people buying new homes, isnt as grounded in reality as it may appear. The A.V. Club, who first reported the news, points out that this is not an entirely new claim, but the story picked up speed today, thanks to the blog Hooked on Houses.
'
A woman named Bobi Jensen shared her experience about being featured on House Hunters with the blog. She explained that the producers changed her and her husbands story about why they were moving, and also shed some light on how those three houses that potential buyers choose from are selected. Jensen explained that prior to being selected, they had already chosen their new house. The other two options were just their friends houses that werent even for sale.
EW spoke with Bobi Jensen via e-mail today and she reiterated the above claims about her episode, which taped in early 2006. She stated that the producers told her how they wanted the storyline to go. She also explained that although it was true she viewed her friends not-for-sale houses as the other home options, that wasnt the norm. Jensen told EW, It wasnt ever intended to be this way The producers were relying on us to set up the homes to tour. We called all over town to realtors that had houses listed and we couldnt get anyone to agree to it . I think they were afraid wed show their house in a bad light.
Overall, Jensen stressed that she loves HGTV and thinks these practices are the most efficient way to handle a show such as House Hunters something the team behind House Hunters seem to agree with.

I do appreciate when doctor's offices have programming other than news. If they had Fox on my blood pressure would be over the top! The worst was when waiting for out patient surgery - they had Food Channel on in the waiting room. That was just plain cruel with a room of people who had not been allowed to eat or drink for the previous twelve hours!

HGTV is a really good neutral channel to have on.

(9,273 posts)Those HGTV house hunter shows are on constant loop; they're fun to watch and it's the only time I watch them. Except at the holidays she has the tv on those Lifetime sappy holiday movies which are also fun. She's a Republican (brainwashed "pro-lifer" but knows not to tick off her customers.

(15,805 posts)There are two versions, one for homes in the US, and another show with international homes. They both have the same format, see 3 houses and pick one. I like the international show better because it's very interesting to see a glimpse of cities around the world and look inside the houses. They are often quite different from American homes, especially in the bathrooms and kitchens, and how they maximise smaller living spaces and conserve energy. I've learned that in many countries, homes don't come with a built in kitchen or even closets, the new owner has to install them as they are considered furniture, not fixtures like in a bathroom.

(47,522 posts)It is on HGTV and when I first sat down, they were talking about $715,000 remodeling! Next they brought in a beautiful sofa in white! Had to wonder how ling it would retain this really white.
And then shoppers came to visit the open house, they did not bat an eye when told it was $715,000. Then there was a bidding war and the house was sold at $725,000. Never found out where it was but some people sure have lots of money..
