NY couple asks black passerby to agree Confederate flags not racist and are gobsmacked when he wontThe reporter said his neighbors then tried to prove their point by asking a 13-year-old black boy playing nearby to validate their feelings.
Are you opposed to the flag at all? Barber asked the teen. Do you have a problem with the flag, as a black person?
The teens answer genuinely seemed to surprise the couple, according to the reporter.
Yeah, it is offensive to me, the teen said. This is the flag of people who want to bring slavery back.
The astonished couple asked the teen to meet with them sometime so they could explain what the flag meant to them, but he declined.

http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~hornby/amuse/story_snow.txtA SOUTHERNER MOVES UP NORTH
Dec 8 5:00 pm - it's starting to snow. The first of the season and
the first one we've seen in years. The wife and I took our hot
buttered rums and sat by the picture window watching the soft flakes
drift down, clinging to the trees and covering the ground. It was
beautiful!
Dec 9 We awoke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering
the
landscape. What a fantastic site. Every tree and shrub covered with a
beautiful white mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time in years
and loved it. I shoveled both our drive and sidewalk. Later, a city
snowplow came along and accidentally covered our drive with compacted
snow from the street. The driver smiled and waved. I waved back and
shoveled our drive again.
Dec 10 It snowed an additional 6 inches last night and the
temperature
has dropped to about 11 degrees. Several limbs from the trees and
shrubs snapped due to the weight of the snow. I shoveled again.
Shortly after, the snowplow came by and did his trick again. Much of
the snow is now brownish-gray.
Dec 11 It warmed up enough during the day to create some slush which
soon became ice when the temperature dropped again. Bought snow tires
for both cars. Fell on my ass in the driveway. $145
to a chiropractor but nothing broken. More snow and ice expected.
Dec 12 Still cold. Sold the wife's car and bought a 4X4 in order to
get
her to work. Slid into a guardrail anyway and did considerable amount
of damage to the right rear quarter pane. Had another 8 inches of that
white shit last night. Both vehicles covered with salt and crud. More
shoveling in store for me today. That goddam snowplow came by twice
today.
Dec 13 2 degrees outside. More fuckin' snow. Not a tree or shrub on
my
property that hasn't been damaged. Power was off most of the night.
Tried to keep from freezing to death with a kerosene heater which
tipped over and nearly burned the house down. I managed to put the
flames out but suffered 2'nd degree burns on my hands and lost most of
my eyelashes and eyebrows. Car slid on ice on the way to the emergency
room and was totalled!!
Dec 14 Goddam mother-fuckin' white shit keeps on coming down. Have to
put
on all the clothes we own just to get to the fucking mailbox. If
I ever catch the son-of-a-bitch that drives the snowplow, I'll chew
open his chest and rip his heart out. I think he hides around the
corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then comes down the
street about 60 MPH and buries our drive again. Power still off.
Toilet froze and part of the roof has started to cave in.
Dec 15 6 goddam more fuckin' inches of fuckin' snow and fuckin' sleet
and
fuckin' ice and god knows what other kind of white fuckin's shit fell
last night. I wounded the fuckin' snowplow asshole with an ice axe but
he got away. Wife left me. The car won't start. I think I'm going
snow-blind. I can't move my toes. More fucking snow expected tonight.
I'm moving the fuck back to Texas!!!

(25,841 posts)I spent my childhood in northern NYS (Utica and north) and grew up with minus 20 degrees and many, many inches of snow being common.
I moved away, to Tucson, Arizona, in 1962. Big change. Anyway, in 1968 I moved back to the east coast and was then hired by Mohawk Airlines (and if you remember them you are showing your age) in January of 1969, and attended two weeks of training in Utica, New York that month. The other women in my class (it seems weird to me to say women, as back then we were girls) were: one from Binghamton NY, one from Syracuse, one from Rochester, and two from Long Island. The two from LI don't count because they don't really get winter there. But the others, who were from Binghamton, Syracuse, and Rochester were totally astonished at the amount of snow they were seeing. I could assure them that this was a perfectly average winter for Utica.
In my childhood we referred to on particular road (Glass Factory Road for those of you who might have heard of it) north from Utica as the Grand Canyon of the North, because in the winter the snow plows threw up side mountains of snow that were easily ten feet high.
We lived on Glass Factory Road, and a couple of times each winter my parents would persuade the snow plow driver to plow out our driveway, because otherwise just trying to shovel it out was impossible.
I don't know if it's still true, but I remember knowing back then that Upstate New York, (and I'm referring to the real Upstate, north of the Mohawk River) got more snow than anywhere east of the Rockies. I'm inclined to believe that, because I've lived in a bunch of other places over the years, including Minneapolis (more cold than snow) and along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains (Golden and Boulder CO), and when we lived in Boulder, I didn't think we got enough snow to be bothered to buy my sons a sled. My standards for snow are truly high.

(1,803 posts)Upstate NY is largely rural, relatively poor and very red. One of the larger employers is the State prison system. A big issue is guns, and there are anti-SAFE Act (NY assault weapon and handgun legislation) everywhere.
There are a number of Confederate flags flying by me a few within a couple of miles and Im not too far north of Albany. But there is karma. A mosque and Islamic learning center just opened across the street from one home in my town with a Confederate flag flying out front.
Id love to post pictures and addresses of these houses somewhere. I presume that the dumbfucks flying these flags arent celebrating their Southern heritage.

I think that should make oberliner happy (disappointed the article was posted from raw story?) but I doubt he/shie will comment on the actual content.

(58,724 posts)Or is it just click bait for Raw Story?
Eko
(7,281 posts)It was done by NPR and its in general discussion. I suppose I could post things like rumors of someone on Trumps transition team having affairs.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)They basically just re-arranged the paragraphs in the NPR article and paraphrased some things slightly.
I don't see how Travis Gettys can put his name on an article that is basically copied from an article written by Arun Venugopal.

(67,782 posts)"Ricky Barber, 30, and his fiancée displayed the flag outside their Plattsburgh home earlier this year, and their neighbor an NPR reporter asked them to explain why they displayed the Civil War flag so far north in Union country."
That was the second sentence in the article, clearly attributing the article to the NPR reporter.
If you have an issue with that I suggest you take it up with Raw Story. Funny thing, articles from Raw Story have been properly posted here for years and I don't recall anyone complaining about them before.
Eliot Rosewater
(31,109 posts)your object because Raw Story is basically reprinting it, which is it?
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I asked in what universe was it a news story and wrote that Raw Story just re-arranged paragraphs in a pre-existing NPR piece for click bait purposes.
No comment was made by me about the importance of the topic.

(58,724 posts)No mention of importance - just asking in what universe a re-arranged article by Raw Story with a click bait headline constitutes news.

(31,798 posts)I lived in the Rochester NY area for 30 years prior to moving to New Jersey and this . . .
The neighbor, Ricky Barber, 30, moved to New York from Georgia, and said the flag is a sign of his Southern pride, as well as a form of defiance.
"You'll hear all these people that gathered down South that are blacks. What about their Black Lives Matter flags?" asked Barber.
"That's pushing back on the white people. Us white people, we retaliate by 'Hey, we got a Confederate flag and whatnot.'"
Then why doesn't he take his ass back to fucking Georgia if he isn't going to assimilate?
With his 'whatnot' take his thingamajiggy and shove it up his whatchamacallit.
Eliot Rosewater
(31,109 posts)"understand" what it means to him.
What is wrong with that?
Sure, what it means to him is the black person he is talking to should be his property, but come on, is that such a big deal really?
Slaves? Surely nobody really objects to that in this day and age, right?
I mean our president, who many saw as harmless so to speak, is a racist who wants to own black people, so how can this be an issue at all, right?
