The US went through a spell of authoritarian/fascistic upheaval during WWI.

German Americans being railroaded in courts.
Those consider unpatriotic for not buying war bonds were beaten.
The federal gov't enlisted private citizens to spy on others.
People arrested for making anti war comments.

Usual conservative/reactionary impulse and violence.

What was the name of the Nazi- supporting group? They had their own uniforms? Who was that speaking? And who was the person arrested for rushing the podium? He had a German accent.
