I visited my barber on Friday.

The foggy mirror in my bathroom made it clear to me that it was beyond time to get my hair and beard back under control.

As usual, my favorite barber (the only one I trust with my full beard) threatened to charge me double, as he does each time I put off the visit until fear of being mistaken as the Wild Man of Borneo forces my hand.

Also as usual, I arrived to find three other guys "of a certain age" waiting ahead of me. Since I always enjoy an opportunity to avoid work, I took my seat anyhow, ready for the usual grumpy old men conversations.

Unlike the usual, however, the mildly obscene banter in the shop seemed different this time. Trump's name came up, but not in defense of some stupid thing he said. Instead, the topics of conversation were about high health insurance costs for those old farts' children and grandchildren. North Korea came up, as well, and comments were not complimentary where Trump was concerned. One white-haired guy mentioned his military service in Korea in the 50s, and called Donald Trump an obscene name.

In fact, unlike any other time I've sat waiting for my haircut, not a single word of defense for the Dotard in Chief was heard from anyone in the place, although the usual mild insults tossed around the room were the same as usual.

Anyhow, I'm back to my sometimes resemblance of an older, bearded college professor again. That's OK. My hair and beard will grow back to a more typical representation of my actual curmudgeonly self soon enough.

It's in the congressional district formerly represented by Michele Bachmann. Yes, the conversation there is typically pro-Trump, when politics are discussed. As for how the guys at the shop on Friday voted, I can't say, except for myself. I voted for Hillary.

Edit to add: Say, next time you run into that Jesus guy, tell him that MineralMan says "Hey!"

The next guy in line for the barber chair said, as I stood up, "That's not a bad haircut, but I still wouldn't buy a used car from you..."

Barbershop culture. It's unique, but there are fewer and fewer small barbershops these days. More's the pity.

He wanted it to cover his ears, style du jour. My uncle would appear from the other room and gesture to cut the back short and all over really. Then Dean would start sobbing. I said, "yeah, yeah, okay." As in 'yeah, right'. My aunt would be sitting with us at the kitchen table consoling Dean telling him I would do it my way and not his dad's.

One time I did bring it up almost to the tips of his ears and he kept his knitted cap on in class. Teacher asked him why he left it on, if he was not feeling well. He told her his ears were showing from his haircut. Kiddos!

Dean used to call me his 'barbra'.

When she was finished, my head looked like a shingled roof. I had to do the "walk of shame" into a real barber shop to get it repaired, and walked out with much shorter hair than was my normal look.

But, as I always say after a less than ideal haircut, "It'll grow out. Never mind."

36. No. At the time she was the current wife.

She was mortified, but had no idea how to fix it. That was back in the poverty days. The barber fixed it just fine. But, below is my very favorite barber story:

I used to let my hair grow until "it stopped by itself," as predicted in the song "Hair." I don't think I got it cut for about four years. Then, on a trip to Iowa, of all places, the former wife and I were staying at a hotel with an indoor pool. It was October. I wanted to take advantage of the pool, but a big sign said, "Guests with long hair must wear bathing caps." Since my hair was about middle back length, I assumed that applied to me.

Now, in Iowa in October, buying a bathing cap was impossible. I tried several places. So, what to do? Well, there was a barber shop in the hotel, luckily enough, so I walked in and took my seat in the chair. The nice barber lady asked how I'd like my hair cut. "Off," I said. "Short." "Are you sure?" she asked. "Yes," I replied. So all that hair went on the floor, and I went swimming. That was the end of my days as an obvious "filthy hippie." My former wife barely recognized me.

From then on, I've been getting a haircut every three or four months. That seems sufficient.

They laugh when I come in for my biannual cut, but I always leave a large tip. Most of the other clients are getting flat tops and buzz cuts touched up. There is very little conversation there. I think most of these clients come from what we call "The Spy Place" a large analyst operation with lots of military and ex-military workers. These folks don't talk much. When I'm done I always take a picture of the pile of hair on the floor causing mirth and some conversation. I always get my money's worth.

To your point, I have been hearing less positive comments and some negative here in Central Virginia from Republicans. One pro Trump neighbor volunteered that Trump needed to grow a thicker skin or he wouldn't get a chance to do great things. Although, still pro Trump, this represents a big shift in his view of Trump. I think Trump will eventually lose this neighbor's support. This is an important shift from "no one is giving him a chance."

As time moves on through this train wreck called the tRump administration’s missteps and outright failures, it just gets harder to make that argument. He has had his chance to do the things he said he would. And he is by almost any measurement a big failure. Can’t work with Congress. Can’t get much of anything done except by executive order. That is bad enough, but the massive legislation he promised has gone undone. (Thank goodness!)

When you factor in his churlishness, his whack-a-doodle statements, his mental disabilities, it just gets harder to defend him and blame those who don’t “give him a chance”.

His sensationalism is falling aside and many in the GOP are seeing that he promised things that cannot happen. The new has worn off, and I suspect your barber shop companions are starting to see they have been conned.

Most GOPers are too proud and hard anti-liberal to listen to anything we say, so they will have to learn the hard way.

What actually could be a good side-effect of tRump is that some more sensible GOPers will begin to distrust Faux News and some talk radio hosts like Limbaugh!
