This is what I was most afraid of, because I'm on SSDI.

One thing were going to be looking at very strongly is welfare reform. Thats becoming a very, very big subject, the president said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. And people are taking advantage of the system, and then other people arent receiving what they really need to live, and we think its very unfair to them.
But some people are really taking advantage of our system from that standpoint, and we are going to be looking very, very strongly, therefore, at welfare reform, he continued. Its gonna be a very big topic under this administration. And its started already, and we have a lot of recommendations that were going to be making, and youll be hearing about them very shortly.

(4,138 posts)It's now TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and very different from SSDI which is insurance that you pay for through your payroll tax.

He should stick to this old adage:

(11,686 posts)is that to get it you have to have worked and earned enough quarters. They have four quarters and the more quarters you have worked the more you get. I am at third quarter. We fucking worked to get this. I became disabled and got onto SSDI years ago. He said during his campaign he would not touch this and I knew then if he won he was going to take it away. It is just a matter of time when he takes SSDI, subsidized housing, and food cards away. As I said before I am bracing myself to be homeless and lose everything.

(2,434 posts)and begin giving us anecdotes. One of my guilty pleasures is watching "Judge Judy" and, without fail, there will be someone appearing who is on "SSDI". They have a "back injury" and Judy will rail about how we are paying for this person. I have written the show on numerous occasions to remind Judy that we worker bees pay into the system to be able to receive SSDI.
I do agree there are many goldbricks out there, but if they qualify for SSDI they generally have been a working person. Admittedly I resent drug addicts and alcoholics receiving SSDI, but that's my own prejudice. If they worked and paid into the system, they are entitled. My concern is doctors being too willing to certify people that may not be deserving. I know that sounds like a conservative, but - in case you didn't know - I'm an old fart and we are more conservative. I would never accept any kind of disability, welfare or food stamps because of the ridiculous way I was raised - in the 50's. It just wasn't done if you could still work any kind of job.

(82,849 posts)It was more than 10 years ago now, so I don't know what the current state of granting benefits is. But I know that from 1993 to 2005, it was very difficult to get certified for SSDI or SSI. We had clients who could barely attend a one hour hearing - and who spent the next three days bed-ridden - only to be told by a review panel or an ALJ that they really could work at some job or another. For many of these people, it was tough enough applying for a "handout" so they could keep body and soul together. To be told that they were malingering was just too much for some of them.
One client I particularly remember had to go all the way to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to win benefits. The opinion started off with a sentence about this case being typical of why people hate government and the law.
I hope the state of the law is better nowadays, but we had a standard passage to insert in many of our briefs that the ALJ wasn't supposed to substitute his own judgment for that of a medical professional. So many times, a denial of benefits would acknowledge that the claimant's treating doctor said the claimant was disabled, but the ALJ would say that during the course of the claimant's hearing, "the claimant didn't seem to be doing too badly," at least to the ALJ's eyes.

(411 posts)Having a doctor vouch for you helps, but doesn't mean you'll win. You have to prove you're disabled with the appropriate medical records, it takes a year or more, and most people need a lawyer's help.

(3,975 posts)In Wi the maximum of Food Stamps for a single elderly poor or disabled person is $15 a MONTH. Pennies a DAY. These are folks who make as little as $8Grand a year. $15 a MONTH. Walker did that and now Trump will hurt them more.

I know you are concerned, however my advice is to be proactive and contact your representatives and voice your concerns and then batten down the hatches (meaning, make sure your iis Are dotted and your tts are crossed....which I am sure you have already done...

(2,785 posts)it's not that the rich aren't pay enough taxes to them. Instead it's poor people taking away from other poor people. After the repukes kick people off the SSDI and SSI programs they deem unworthy you can bet whoever remains on those programs will not receive one extra dime in benefits. There isn't widespread fraud in the SSDI or SSI programs. That's just a myth. Not that their isn't any fraud there was that thing in KY a few years back ,but generally the SSDI and SSI programs have low levels of fraud for large programs. My guess they'll probably try and reform the grid rules along the line of the if you can breathe you can work full time right wing hate the poor, the sick and the injured logic.

(411 posts)The quote below is from the article, and I've always wondered why repugs wanted to cut these benefits so badly, since it's republican states that benefit the most from them ... to the tune of 7 to 10% of the state's income. This money isn't saved, it goes directly into groceries, gas, and other local businesses. I can't imagine they really want to cut into that money flow. I think that they've always talked about doing this, but knew they never had to because we Democrats were around in large enough numbers to save them from themselves. Now they might have to think twice about their tired old talking points when they actually have to implement them!
'Trumps proposed fiscal 2018 budget called for a massive reduction in funding for social safety nets, such as food stamps, Social Security disability insurance benefits, and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.'
I'm om SSDI myself, and my husband is retired, so we're pinching pennies and this scares me too. So, I'm not trying to be light with a serious subject, but just give you my impression of the general picture as I see it. Of course, these are the days of the crazy clown puppet and anything goes, so what do I know.
