Bannon warns California may try to secede

BY OLIVIA BEAVERS - 10/21/17 10:35 AM EDT

Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon warned Friday that California may attempt to secede from the United States in the next decade if Republicans do not attempt to reassume control of the state.

"If you do not roll this back ... 10 or 15 years from now the folks in Silicon Valley and the progressive left in this state are going to try to secede from the Union," Bannon told a group of college Republicans in Anaheim, Calif.

Bannon pointed to the state's defiance of federal mandates including its protections for so-called sanctuary cities, which limit how local authorities can cooperate with federal immigration agents.

"We are going to enforce federal law. You’ve nullified the sanctuary cities law in this state. In fact, you’re a sanctuary state," he told the crowd.

Any effort put such a referendum on the ballot would need to collect 585,407 valid signatures, an unlikely possibility. Still, we have a fringe group, the Calexit campaign, that wants California to secede. Its being run by a 30-year-old in Siberia, and Russia Today reported that “a campaign calling for the independence of California from the United States has opened an ‘embassy’ in Moscow." California Congressman, Dana Rohrabacher loves it.

The leader of California separatist group Yes California announced in a 1,600-word statement on Monday that he "intends to make Russia" his "new home" and is therefore withdrawing his petition for a "Calexit" referendum.

Louis Marinelli, who has spearheaded the Calexit campaign since 2015, set up a makeshift embassy in Moscow in December in partnership with far-right Russian nationalists who enjoy Kremlin support while promoting secessionist movements in Europe.

"I have found in Russia a new happiness, a life without the albatross of frustration and resentment towards ones’ homeland, and a future detached from the partisan divisions and animosity that has thus far engulfed my entire adult life," Marinelli wrote on Monday. "Consequently, if the people of Russia would be so kind as to welcome me here on a permanent basis, I intend to make Russia my new home."

He added that he will "not return to California in the forseeable future" ...

50. Russia-Linked Facebook Group Tried to Recruit a Texas Secession Organization
Sat Oct 21, 2017, 08:52 PM
Oct 2017

... Secession has been popular in Texas from the moment they joined the union, so its secession movement is much more organic than the one that seemingly sprung up overnight on the west coast. Natasha Bertrand—a BI reporter who has been covering this Russia ordeal—spoke to Daniel Miller, the president of The Texas Nationalist Movement. Miller said of the shadowy Facebook group linked to Russia, "when they decided to start doing all these ‘Texit’ rallies, they reached out and wanted us to participate, and we said 'thanks, but no thanks'" ...

Facebook took down the Texas Nationalist Movement page during their purge of Russian accounts. Heart of Texas created a Twitter profile in November 2015 when both social networks experienced a massive surge of Russia-linked fake accounts, and the typos and unfamiliarity with English throughout its posts further raised suspicion ...

Sun Oct 22, 2017, 07:42 AM

to move to Russia where he now teaches English. So that much is true. But apparently his wasn't the only astroturf outfit promoting secession, and unlike Marinelli's, the other didn't fold:

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/leader-cal-exit-drops-bid-california-secede-instead-moves-russia-n747706

So that raises two questions: why did Marinelli roll it up after the election, if his Putin-purpose was to splinter the great satan? It looks more like he was getting checks from a Trump operation that may well have diverted them through the bank of Voskresenskiye to cover their tracks. Russia is a big country.

The second question is, if California secession means so much to Marinelli, what the heck is he doing in Russia? IOW when you start drilling down on these Russia stories they fall apart fast. Call me suspicious if you like but I like to call it critical thinking.

There is no secession movement in California. It's a propaganda effort by Russia and their pawns (like Bannon) to weaken the US. Even the latest secessionist movement in California was a Kremlin operation.

If you see any talking points that there is large support for secession in any state, it's most likely Russian propaganda. It seems like this is their latest campaign against the US. It's the classic divide and conquer strategy. They failed at creating a race war, so they're trying to turn the states against each other now.

98. If secession happens, say goodbye to the progressive movement in the United States.

For starters, Texas, Florida, and Arizona get the vast majority of our representatives in the Congressional reapportionment process, not to mention the loss of two perpetually progressive senators, and finally, the loss of 55 electoral votes. That would virtually guarantee a permanent (and most probably far more conservative/supremacist) Congress, as well as a permanent White Supremacist in the White House. This would not bode well for the progressives left behind. What California could do is to move the Chinese and/or Russian military into the bases that the US would have to surrender in California so that the balance of power would completely ensure that the U.S. radicalized white supremacist Republicans don't attack California and retake it in a coup, but that won't be the least of its problems.

In short, better just to ignore the bastards in the White House and Congress and enact progressive laws, and work to get current red states to go blue. Far better for everyone concerned. In the long run, a progressive United States can merge with Canada and Mexico to form a progressive North American Union, which would ensure that the new Constitution precludes the destructive elements of the original US Constitution and adds new ones to guarantee single payer, full rights for all citizens, and progressive governance for all. In short, I want the entire US to secede from its white supremacist constitution and merge with progressive entities on a global scale. THAT is ONE secessional movement that we should be striving for (and we already are, to be quite frank!).
