Have you been drafted? Or have you been in the military?

I'm from Germany, I was drafted, and as a draftee you had two options:
1. military-service, a bit shorter than 1 year, okay pay, no combat whatsoever unless you actively apply to be transfered to a unit that goes into combat
2. civil-service, a bit longer than 1 year, lousy pay, caring for old and disabled people

I did civil-service, because being yelled at by a drill-sergeant was not my thing.

If done right, a draft is not as bad as you make it sound. And it's certainly not comparable to slavery.
