"....writers Dave Johnson and Isaiah J. Poole discuss Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's claim that the office supply chain Staples is an example of the work he did creating jobs as the head of Bain Capital. Not so, Johnson says: At best, it shifted jobs from smaller competitors Staples put out of business, and in many cases it replaced living wage jobs with jobs barely above minimum wage. Staples may be a good place to buy pens and paper, but it's not a good model for how we should rebuild a middle-class economy. Johnson talks about the policies that we really need for good jobs and a strong middle class...."

(653 posts)Without looking them about, each superstore job replaces about 1.3-1.4 Mom & Pop store jobs - to express it very roughly.
So I agree with the general point and raised this is previous discussions about Staples.
EDIT: here's one quick link roughly comparable to help illustrate
http://www.ilsr.org/key-studies-walmart-and-bigbox-retail/
This study presents the most sophisticated analysis to date of Wal-Marts impact on retail employment and wages. Analyzing national data, the study found that the opening of a Wal-Mart store reduces county-level retail employment by 150 jobs. Because Wal-Mart stores employ an average of 360 workers, this suggests that for every new retail job created by Wal-Mart, 1.4 jobs are lost as existing businesses downsize or close. The study also found that the arrival of a Wal-Mart store reduces total county-wide retail payroll by an average of about $1.2 million.

(15,359 posts)before Staples came in. They merged to try and hold on. One of my buddies worked for them and got to keep his job. Not for long though. They couldn't make it. I don't have to tell you that there are not as many good full-time jobs at Staples as those stores had.

(4 posts)He is always on both sides of every issue. I was running Bain so look at my business skills, but I was not really running it. I will release my tax returns, but only the ones make me look good. We can't trust this guy and his doppelganger. Which one is running for president?
How can we trust a guy who wants to keep everything about himself a secret. From his taxes to religion, we know nothing about what this guy is really about. Mit Romney will say and do anything be president to fulfill his Daddy's dream. He is not capable of the job. We already tried one destined son who believes he should be president because his Daddy told him so. We don't want another George Bush.
