Lying to the FBI is a federal crime. In America. Sovereign nation.

Speaking to the FBI is a choice, protected by the constitution and the courts.
But when you choose to lie, mislead or obstruct...

He's never been on the left, FWIW. If he has a coherent ideology it's libertarian with a soupçon of antisemitism. During the Bush years he was canonized because he was right or useful for the moment, while the totality of his record, and and the bad judgment and bad faith that were obvious from his behavior, were ignored.
