On the Help and Meta Discussion forum I had put forth the idea of there being a new group on DU. A group for Asian news, music, culture, history etc. (It was at Skinner's suggestion that I post this here ..) He said.. and I quote:
"If you can round up 10 people interested in joining, let me know and I'll set it up.
(In case there is any confusion, you have my permission to post in the General Discussion forum to gauge interest. Just include a little note in your post indicating that Admin said it was okay.)"
So... with that said... I know some of you have enjoyed my photos of Japan in the past.. and like reading the Japanese Folk Tales I had been posting. If any of you like Asian culture.. Music, language, food, fashion, entertainment, art, history, traditions, please feel free to sign up here, so I can present the names to Skinner. You need not be Asian to sign up (Though it helps ^^ HEY guys! Girls this is for us!!) and would be most welcome!! Huan Yin! Funyihng! Hwan Yeong! Yin Dee Ton Rub! Kumusta! Asia forumu e Yokoso!
I would be willing to host the group, or if possible have rotating hosts. (Can we do that?) It would just take TEN to sign up to have an Asian group (Under Race & Ethnicity ) and believe me, it will be fun!
Please support us by signing up here!! *bows deeply*
It would be much appreciated.

It would be nice to have a place to go if I wanted to talk about j/k-dramas / anime, when I get in to them again (it's a passing phase, but when I find a really good show I'm a sap!).

AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)That is a wonderful old video. Thank you so much for sharing it!! I don't know much about the Tanuki stories (being a native San Franciscan) However, if you go to the "Religion" Section, I will be posting more Japanese folk tales.. As many as I can find...and hope you will find them satisfying! I will post them in my journal as well as post them in our group..once we have it established.
Plus.. many Cultural items as well!

Let hope everyone jumps into the pool!

(53,661 posts)Maybe someone can answer my silly questions about Japanese cartoons. My kid is a big fan and know all the details and it's very confusing.
I always wanted to visit and have friends who hosted students from and have neighbors from there.
And I used to buy many beautiful things from Japan and watch television shows from Japan. And don't forget Ichiro!
This will help expand our horizons here at DU.

If ever you have any kind of questions about Anime, I may be the one to ask! I have a huge collection, and (Shhhhh don't tell anyone but I work for a Japanese Anime/Manga company here in SF.) and have some knowledge about them.

DU is a big community and it will be great for people to share their views about Asia, both from inside and outside the many countries that are there. I also have quite a few news links and thanks to Twitter, feeds from various blog and news sources covering places like China, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and other countries. I also have many friends from those areas as well!

(5,214 posts)As a person of dubious ancestry; German, Black Irish (hence Spanish, Moor, African, etc...) I can applaud one's wanting to keep up with their culture, albeit by proxy.
As it is, my mother's children's ancestry is pure Filipino. From our conversations that go that way, they tell me that their mother says a few things about what she can remember of what her grandparents told her about the Philippines (they were the first generation). About all I can do is cuss in a few words and I'm not sure if they are Filipino, Polynesian or Pidgin.
Even these few 'cuss' words are mostly just vulgar body parts. I'd either get a date or slapped if I only said these to certain classes of people on the islands.

although i am South Asian - which seems to be a new category in the new world order -
in ancient history, BMM (before the year 2000), my native country was considered Asian;
plus, there are more Asians here in NYC, than in the land where i was born.
furthermore, this is reply #70 to your original post - which is a magnitude of a lucky number.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to send him a message, put a link to this post and request his staff to create an
Asian group (for the Race & Ethnicity section) which many of us would like to see!
Thanks so much for your support!
By the way, I have a friend who told me about her people called the MiEn. (Here is more about them: http://www.angelfire.com/ms/MaYiSm/MienPeople.html) I also know many who are Humong, (not related to the MiEn). Its so interesting to learn about cultures
and people, you didn't know about! (I should include the Ainu of Japan, they have been there a long, long time!)
