That's been discussed endlessly here and no doubt elsewhere.

If he tries to order the Deputy Attorney General to fire him, it would be the Saturday Night Massacre all over again.

Probably Trump himself has no real recollection of what happened then, but many of those around him are old enough to recall it and wouldn't want a rerun of that fiasco.

But I bet if you ran the phrase "Saturday Night Massacre" by him he'd think it was the name of a movie. Or if he even vaguely recalled what happened, he would have zero understanding of the long-term consequences.

is that there were decent people running the Republican Party in those days who finally called an end to Nixon. We don't have that now.
