(13,466 posts)News organizations need to try to have their fact straight. Anybody can start googling a name. How about some real journalism?
boxman15
(1,033 posts)James Holmes is an incredibly common name, if I were to guess. Just googling that name and seeing what you come up with is reckless journalism. It's about the race to be first, not the commitment to accuracy that drives so many of these news organizations, including ABC apparently.

Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)that linked the two.
We don't know that, yet.
When I was reporting, I often was given "deep background" on a matter and then used that information to further investigate a story. Sometimes it seemed as though I pulled a link out of thin air, but it was really a trusted source who set me on the correct path.
I'll wait and reserve judgment. ABC could be wrong, in which case, a lawsuit could be pending.

(20,958 posts)Good Morning America tweet:
Suspect's mother tells @ABC News "You have the right person... I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado.
(that's what GMA tweeted out, but ABC News likely had a longer conversation that resulted in the Brian Ross speculation)

(42,290 posts)Big news organizations should not be participating in raw speculation without confirmation.
Old time journalists (i.e. "reputable" journalists) must be cringing over this.

That's what big news organizations do.
That's ALL they do.
Journalism is dead.

(14,061 posts)Totally irresponsible. Take a few minutes to do some actual investigation before you broadcast that kind of information.

(14,549 posts)they do.
This is a re-run of the ACA decision so how could the other MSM entities point fingers?

(1,055 posts)The Breitbart site, for example, made an irresponsible claim that the shooter was a registered Democrat. They try to sell themselves as a "news site" so they are equally as irresponsible as ABC.

(28,158 posts)First, a quick search shows there are more than one, "Jim Holmes" in Aurora, CO. and they're all older than 24-years of age.
Irresponsible and foolish on ABC's part.
GarroHorus
(1,055 posts)Good god, at least the ABC people went with somebody from the Denver area, Breitbart's idiots are claiming he registered as a Democrat in LaPlata County, which is almost completely the opposite side of the state from Aurora:

(19,458 posts)otherwise I doubt they'd post it. The local news station may know him. When I worked at an NBC affiliate and a newspaper, we knew ALL the guys like that, as they regularly contacted us, threatened us and others. I have no doubt that a local affiliate has done some ground work to find the guy out.

librechik
(30,674 posts)whether it is the James Holmes in question or some other James Holmes. I don't see their evidence that he is definitely not the same guy as yet. They just can't confirm it is, unless they asked the Teapers, and they haven't said that they did.

ABC News speculates - is this the Colorado shooter? (Tea Party)

Here is "the page" --
http://denverteaparty.ning.com/profile/JimHolmes?xg_source=activity
This is his "upcoming activity" - a Fox News person lecturing about "global islamic terrorism" - sigh....
http://denverteaparty.ning.com/events/event/listUserEvents?user=0yurc5erotx1c
And I think this is supposed to be his "past" activities?
http://denverteaparty.ning.com/events/event/listArchive
Anyway, it would not be fun to be someone name "James Holmes" from "Aurora, Colorado" today.
Sympathy to the victims.
