As the chief official White House photographer for President Barack Obama, Pete Souza had top security clearance and sat in on most meetings and major events with the president.
"I was there all the time," he says. "I wasn't talking to [Obama] all the time, but I was always in every meeting and pretty much every situation that he had as president."

Health care costs. The budget deficit. Latin America. The Egyptian economy. Election strategy (this was July 2012). Syria. Russia.
It was amazing. I've been able to discuss THAT many themes in one sitting with exactly THREE people in public life, and one of them was a soft-spoken, intellectual Republican whose "public" life was a fictional portrayal of him in a hit film, where the guy playing him made him out to be someone COMPLETELY unlike the real person. Most people never even knew he is a Republican.
Besides Obama, the only other Democrat in that category I can think of is Howard Dean, although I got the impression from a few short encounters that Bill and Hillary Clinton are the same way.

(54,437 posts)Actually, what happened was that he was to meet with someone from the Democrats Abroad, and there was a last minute cancellation, so the White House emailed me and asked if I would be interested in an hour with the President. Of course, I said, no, fuck off, if I can't have two hours, I'm not interested. (J/K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
I DID have to get permission from my wife, as we were in Massachusetts at the time, and the meeting was scheduled for the last day of our vacation there. She said OK, so I got the last seat on the earliest commuter plane (7 seats!) from Provincetown to Boston. Boston to DC was no problem. At the Provincetown airport, I got suspicious stares from everyone--from the check-in counter to the TSA to the other passengers, since this was the first time since 1954 that anyone had shown up at that airport in a business suit.
