We have been so red that for all practical purposes - the Republican primary was the only election that mattered. Republicans running upopposed in the General has been the norm.
But something happened last year following cheeto's election. We dems got organized.. Had multiple meetings and got 2 candidates to run for town council.
We knocked on over 3000 doors. We gave out flyers at soccer grounds. We had folks protesting our Republican congressman. Our enthusiasm was so palpable that Republicans for the FIRST TIME ever went door to door.
The were 5 candidates in all. 2 Ds 2Rs and 1 Libertarian.
So after the votes were tallied, our main Democratic candidate was the highest vote getter. She is in.
We currently have an R at the second place - but she is ahead of the third place Democrat by 8 votes. Eight fucking votes. But there are 21 provisional ballots yet to be counted.
So we still have a long shot to win both seats.
Stay tuned.
UPDATE
out of 21 ballots only 14 were found valid. The R and D candidates got 7 each. So we lost the second seat by 8 votes.

Thanks for all your hard work. I'm glad that you were rewarded with some success.

(1,547 posts)But... Mostly we are over the moon. Our Town has a 3:2 registration advantage for Republicans. But we did not let that deter us.
We are are energized for 2018. A local town candidate is running for Congress.. And we exactly know what to do. Knock knock knock.

(82,849 posts)One win and one very narrow loss. That's got to be encouraging. Good job, and better luck next time. A razor thin margin like that might get even a Republican thinking about how he can better serve all his constituents, instead of just his pals and donors.

(2,419 posts)with these folks looking to unseat Leonard. I can tell you from first hand knowledge that he is quite nervous. Primary challenge from the right, general election challenge from the left and he wishes he was back in the state senate.

(2,419 posts)of republican scumbaggery in Berkley Heights. Your former mayor, Mr. Cohen, and his brother with his links to Christie. Tried to make him a judge but he couldn't pass the judiciary committee. They stashed the sniveling little creep down at Rutgers. He'll have to find a real job in a couple of weeks.

(28,151 posts)All the sackcloth and ashes bullshit about DNC etc. It's the people on the ground, in the small towns and rural counties that have to make it happen!
I live in northern MI. Imagine Michigan, shaped like a mitten (the lower half at least). Draw a line across it from middle of the thumb to other side of mitten. The area below that line is then only part of the map that counts to those in power. Completely ignored. Oh sure the chair of the MDP will dutifully hit your chicken dinners and what not but yeah, that's about it. So we got busy up here on our own. Built a great organization, raised lots of money and started spreading the effort to surrounding counties. What a difference! Oh sure the region is still red but now there are Dems on the ballot and each cycle we do a little better. We. The little people on the ground.
Cause that is how it is done. No hero is going to show up and make all this happen. Ever.
I can't tell you how heartened I am to read your report. I know you're discouraged by the results but this was just the first volley! You guys did great!
Keep on rockin' the free world!!
