I don't think there was any secret. Charlottesville shocked a lot of people who were on the sidelines, and the huge influx of educated, enlightened voters moving into the DC suburbs, especially Arlington and Fairfax County provided us with a liberal cushion many purple states don't have. Fairfax County, where I lived, provided nearly half the 230,000 votes of Northam's victory margin.
