And let that young girl go
But you, you know it all
You have yourself a ball
And now it is too late
As you look from cell number 8
I tried to tell you mate
17 and a half
Is still jailbait
So tomorrow's today
For the trial of jailbait
And this you watch and see
The young girl will go free
And you'll get 1 to 3"

(42,025 posts)It has been 16 in most states for decades. In the eyes of the law, a 14 year old is a child.

14 is normally always past that. More like Hebephilia.
Edited to correct the term. I pulled it from memory and chose the wrong term. My mistake, sorry about that.

(16,453 posts)It looks like it's only males in the old Greek sense. I am mistaken. I mixed up terms after reading about Ancient Greece and their particular customs.
The term I was looking for is Hebephilia.

(34,195 posts)Until I googled it.
Now you've got me 'googling' again:
"Hebephilia is the sexual preference for early adolescent children (those roughly ages 11 to 14)"
So now, what about a sexual preference for 14 to the legal age of consent?
What would that be called?

"Ephebophilia is the primary sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents, generally ages 15 to 19."

(31,261 posts)I used to think that women married younger 50 or 100 years ago until I looked at an average marriage age back to the 1790's. The average marriage age has stayed above 20 years old for a long time.

(45,953 posts)An individual who is 19 years old or older has sexual contact (short of intercourse) with someone who is younger than 16 but older than 12 has committed sexual abuse. If a person over the age of 16 has sex with a person under that age, they have committed second-degree rape, provided they are more than two years older than their partner.
I can't say for certain that this is what the law when Moore was 32 (38 years ago).

(46,135 posts)consent. So your confusing some things.
Statutory rape is having sex without someone who is under the legal age of consent. The age Age differs from state to state.

14 years of age is too young. 16 is too young for a 32 year old. 18 is pushing it for a 32 year old, IMO. It's certainly inappropriate.

(34,195 posts)I think the word Pedophile is used incorrectly for someone who is interested in someone who is 14.
From Psychology Today:
Pedophilia is defined as the fantasy or act of sexual activity with children who are generally age 13 years or younger.
It can still be illegal for an adult to have sex with someone younger than the age of consent,
but calling that person a 'pedophile' seems incorrect.

(110,171 posts)So it wouldn't apply to a 14 year old.
But the term child-molester would, because she was a child and he molested her.

(103,856 posts)Most states are 16...
It should be a two-fold answer.. the DIFFERENCE in ages is as important (to me)..
a 17 yr old girl who is "trying on her adult status" should NOT be "dating" someone significantly older than she is..
this is why I was so opposed to the way school districts have changed post-elementary schools. It used to be k-6..junior high (7 8 & 9) and then high school 10 11 & 12..
12 yr olds exited elementary and in those awkward years, contended with kids very near their own developmental experiences..of course back then NO ONE "dated" in junior high..
Now they start high school at 9th grade...some 9th graders are very young compared to seniors...
CNN recently had a special about a young guy (a senior) who sexted a 15 year old and ended up on the list (possibly for the rest of his life)
I am so glad our kids are grownups.. It must be frightening to have teens these days..
