General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow come I have never had the urge to own a gun?
Hunting sounds like fun, but going to the supermarket seems so much easier.
And cars are so much sexier than a gun...
Does this gun make my penis look bigger?
shall I keep going?

(23,272 posts)had thieves steal tack in the middle of the night out the back door of a barn while we were working at the front door.
Having a gun wouldn't make me feel safer and I have no desire to hunt another creature when I have ample food available to buy.

(2,526 posts)I bet you'd find quite the correlation between gun hobbyists and IQ.
Just saying.

(18,021 posts)Used to know a lot of shooters - all walks of life and professions. Don't broad brush.
And if you don't like the look of guns, perhaps you've been looking at the wrong ones. Historical armament exhibits a craft approaching high art.

(373 posts)I personally enjoy recreational target shooting immensely.
I've been doing it for years and I find it to be rewarding and fun.
I also have a concealed carry permit but rarely carry it.
I don't hunt.
It's fine to not own guns. Hell, tons of people SHOULDN'T.
What I don't appreciate is someone implying that because my interests are different than theirs, that I am somehow mentally unstable, stupid, deviant, or (best of all) impotent or "Organ deficient".
Gun control is a losing issue. Mental health care and reform is where it's at.

(72,187 posts)I don't understand the attraction. Self-defense, I can understand. But when someone owns dozens of guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition, and sports a "You'll take my gun when..." attitude, I can only assume his life is so empty, miserable, and pathetic that guns are the only things that matter to him or her.
I did a play recently with a gun fetishist who was rhapsodizing about his guns and his 4,000 rounds of ammo. At the end of his firearm-porn polemic, he must have realized his was in a room with a bunch of pro-gun-control liberals, and got a little defensive; "I've got daughters to protect."
I took him down a notch by pointing out to him: "Problem is, your daughters aren't going to be threatened by some random gunman on the streets; they're going to be threatened by husbands, and boyfriends, and co-workers; people that they know. And all your guns won't do a lick of good to help them."
In light of today's 'random gunman' tragedy, I would have added: "Suppose your daughters were at the movie without you? Or you were at the movie without your guns? Or you had your guns with you, and in the noise, chaos, confusion and smoke, you accidentally shot one of your girls?"
But there's no appealing to logic with gun fetishists...

(72,187 posts)And yes, I have had no weapons training.
Unless you count M-16 Basic Rifle Marksmanship in the Army; continuous re-training on the rifle throughout a four-year active duty hitch; training on the .45 automatic and the Beretta 9mm personal sidearms issued to tank crewmen in the field, safety and proficiency training on the M-60 machine gun, the M-2 .50 caliber vehicle crew-served weapon (we called it the "Ma Deuce"
, the M-240 co-axial machine gun, and the M-256 main gun of the tank.
This is me, on the right, bearing my issue M1911A1 .45 automatic in my shoulder holster in the Gulf in 1991:

When I was a teenager, my father taught me to shoot his .38 Colt and his Smith & Wesson .357.
But other than all of that, you're right. No weapons training.
I suppose one could say I got an enthusiasm for guns out of my system during my service in the Army. Firing guns that most tea-baggers could only wet-dream about...
Edited to correct a dangling modifier...

(14,524 posts)... that those who are the loudest screechers for their "right" to go armed and stupid, are also the ones who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near ANY sort of weapon?

guns. Unfortunately, in the red state where I live, the most "enthusiastic" gun nuts are also bigots and support right wing causes.

Out of curiosity, where did you get the data that the Gungeon is "invisible" to most DUers?

(5,580 posts)But i do own guns as we live in the bfe. We use the two two for hunting critters. The twelve gaauge for hunting and just in case and we both have concealed glocks also just in case. I guess it comes down to individual choices and if one feels the need to own a certain tool in case its needed.

Does my penis make my gun look small?
Hunting is for the dedicated with lots of disposable income, time, and patience. Once you get all your basic equipment it's still pretty costly year to year. However.com it's much more fun than a trip to the supermarket. Unless it's cold and wet...

(5,580 posts)rounds, hardly expensive, as to time i carry whenever i work outside and hunt as i walk around the woods. I got no idea why you think hunting is expensive. PS my shotgun cost just over 200 from a neighbour.
