How come I have never had the urge to own a gun?

Hunting sounds like fun, but going to the supermarket seems so much easier.

And cars are so much sexier than a gun...

Does this gun make my penis look bigger?

shall I keep going?

had thieves steal tack in the middle of the night out the back door of a barn while we were working at the front door.

Having a gun wouldn't make me feel safer and I have no desire to hunt another creature when I have ample food available to buy.

Used to know a lot of shooters - all walks of life and professions. Don't broad brush.

And if you don't like the look of guns, perhaps you've been looking at the wrong ones. Historical armament exhibits a craft approaching high art.

I personally enjoy recreational target shooting immensely.

I've been doing it for years and I find it to be rewarding and fun.

I also have a concealed carry permit but rarely carry it.

I don't hunt.

It's fine to not own guns. Hell, tons of people SHOULDN'T.

What I don't appreciate is someone implying that because my interests are different than theirs, that I am somehow mentally unstable, stupid, deviant, or (best of all) impotent or "Organ deficient".

Gun control is a losing issue. Mental health care and reform is where it's at.

I don't understand the attraction. Self-defense, I can understand. But when someone owns dozens of guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition, and sports a "You'll take my gun when..." attitude, I can only assume his life is so empty, miserable, and pathetic that guns are the only things that matter to him or her.

I did a play recently with a gun fetishist who was rhapsodizing about his guns and his 4,000 rounds of ammo. At the end of his firearm-porn polemic, he must have realized his was in a room with a bunch of pro-gun-control liberals, and got a little defensive; "I've got daughters to protect."

I took him down a notch by pointing out to him: "Problem is, your daughters aren't going to be threatened by some random gunman on the streets; they're going to be threatened by husbands, and boyfriends, and co-workers; people that they know. And all your guns won't do a lick of good to help them."

In light of today's 'random gunman' tragedy, I would have added: "Suppose your daughters were at the movie without you? Or you were at the movie without your guns? Or you had your guns with you, and in the noise, chaos, confusion and smoke, you accidentally shot one of your girls?"

But there's no appealing to logic with gun fetishists...

And yes, I have had no weapons training.

Unless you count M-16 Basic Rifle Marksmanship in the Army; continuous re-training on the rifle throughout a four-year active duty hitch; training on the .45 automatic and the Beretta 9mm personal sidearms issued to tank crewmen in the field, safety and proficiency training on the M-60 machine gun, the M-2 .50 caliber vehicle crew-served weapon (we called it the "Ma Deuce&quot , the M-240 co-axial machine gun, and the M-256 main gun of the tank.

This is me, on the right, bearing my issue M1911A1 .45 automatic in my shoulder holster in the Gulf in 1991:

When I was a teenager, my father taught me to shoot his .38 Colt and his Smith & Wesson .357.

But other than all of that, you're right. No weapons training.

I suppose one could say I got an enthusiasm for guns out of my system during my service in the Army. Firing guns that most tea-baggers could only wet-dream about...

Edited to correct a dangling modifier...

Plus snowmobiles suck in Florida.

Now table saws are something our Founding Fathers would have approved! Just think how fast they could manufacture furniture.

But i do own guns as we live in the bfe. We use the two two for hunting critters. The twelve gaauge for hunting and just in case and we both have concealed glocks also just in case. I guess it comes down to individual choices and if one feels the need to own a certain tool in case its needed.
